Our protections are built to always block 4 weak so our QB feels confident in that there is at least a plan to keep him from getting blindsided.
To do this you have to slide your center weak and send your back weak. This leaves you with a BOB principle on the strong side - hence both LB's should have a hot principle applied to them. With a good center (who is uncovered) we have had him double read from weak to strong, that leaves one LB hot on strong side.

formation would be one back with 3 wides and a TE or it could be 2 backs with the H-Back offset strong and the tailback releasing weak.

In 2/3 Jet protection back has a double read strong. Center can make a call that would put him in a slide with BSG and BST, or he can make a call that would have him block offside backer and d-tackle with either guard. If BSG guard is uncovered he can make a fan call or stick call. stick meaning BST blocks DE and BSG pops off the line for backer. It says for one of the example "Alert bang sift vs. 4 weak"

I guess if the WS comes up then you have to be prepared for 4 weak.

Yeah I know Trips with a TE on the other side would discourage 4 weak unless the DC was taking a huge risk.

What about 3 wide/1 TE/1 back with TE and flanker to one side and split end and slot to other side? strongside of protection is TE side (where back goes to block)?? In this case if you see a threat of 4 weak you would change the protection right?

When John Jenkins first went to the University of Houston - he MURDERED everyone with his "R & S" offense - FEATURING 6 man pro. People figured out the inherent weaknesses of 6 man pro, & they ran him out of town following two 4 & 7 seasons!

More than any other man, John Jenkins probably has caused the most problems for the
image of the Run and Shoot offense. Jenkins first caught on to the scheme when he was special
teams coach for Jack Pardee's Houston Gamblers in 1984. When Mouse Davis moved to
become the head coach of the Denver Gold in 1985, Jenkins took over the offense and did not
miss a beat. Jenkins followed Pardee to the University of Houston where the Run and Shoot
was immediately installed. From 1987 to 1990, the Cougars went 31-6-1 and produced a
Heisman winner in Andre Ware. When Pardee moved on to the Houston Oilers in 1990 the
whole show belonged to Jenkins. What followed was one of the most controversial displays of
football production ever seen. Was this man a genius or a maniac? His team, still on probation
from before he and Pardee had arrived, went 10-1 in 1990. His second quarterback, David
Klingler, broke 33 NCAA records, including throwing for 716 yards in one game, yet he did not
win the Heisman Trophy and Jenkins became one of the most hated men in college football. The
reason: the manner in which he won games. Jenkins constantly ran up the score on his
opponents, possibly the most unethical act to football coaches. By keeping his starters in the
game and continuing to throw the football long after the game's outcome was decided, Jenkins
embarrassed schools by ridiculous margins such as 82-28, 95-21, 84-21, and 69-0. His
quarterback once threw for eleven touchdown passes in a game against division 1- AA Eastern
Washington. The scores were not the worst part. He made no attempt to ever apologize for his
actions, and the manner in which he conducted himself made him unloved as well. He refused to
share the secrets of his offense with high school coaches, prohibited others from watching his
practices, and shredded his offensive play books after his players had memorized them . As he
so lightly put it, "Do I.B.M. and Xerox share their policies so that some competitor can come in
and kick their butts?." One rival coach put it best when he stated,
"We survive in the coaching business by helping one another. Jenkins has shown an
inability to do this. Everyone resents a guy who thinks he invented the game". Jenkins quickly
was run out of town, his resignation coming after his record fell to 4-7 in back to back seasons
and following allegations that he had violated NCAA rules for exceeding practice time limits and
making payments to recruits. Jenkin's blatant abuse of power left a bitter taste in the mouths of
most of the football world. He provided an example of how powerful this system could be, but
also how it could be abused.

Texas A & M in 1991 did a GREAT job vs John Jenkins' "R & S". He never recovered from that.

Bob Davie was DC at A&M then and he has talked about how they would attack the hell out of the run and shoot. I remember what his defense did to Ty Detmer and BYU too. I have never seen a QB so beat up in my life as Detmer was that day. I think they sacked him 9 times and held BYU to 14 points.

The run and shoot can be shut down by scheme too. Especially blitzing and zone blitzing teams.

Nonetheless - If you study the 1991 A&M/HOUSTON film you will see that Bob Davie exposed the weakness of 6 man protection by putting both OLB's on the ball & bringing them. Houston had people too! In 1989 they went 9-2 & put up 589 points in 11 games (including 95 vs SMU)! In 1990 they went 10-1 & put up 511 points in 11 games. In 1991 A&M showed us the weaknesses of the R&S!

I disagree that Jenkins great talent at Houston. Hardly any of his receivers or linemen ever made it to be high draft picks and the 2 QBs were more system guys than anything else. A@M on the other hand had numerous high draft picks when Davie was there. Miami killed Houston playing a 4-3 cover 2 and a few weeks later TCU ran the same scheme and got killed by the Coogs. Jenkins problem wasnt the x's and o's it was his own self destructive coaching practices.

If you don't think there was talent at Houston when Jenkins was there - how do you explain them beating U. of Texas 66-15 in 1988; 47-9 in 1989; AND 23-14 in 1991? Do you think that was pure coaching???

I simply said they didnt have great talent as evidenced by their lack of NFL prospects ,not that they were talentless. Also that A@M team held FLA ST to what, 3 pts in the Cotton Bowl that year? To me a good comparison would be with Dennis Ericksons Wash ST teams from that era. Good teams with a wide open scheme but it wasnt until he got to Miami with the truly great prospects that his offense became a national force. Switch the talent on Houston and A@M and you would have seen some offense!!

Look at the Coogs records the 3 years AFTER the R@S and Jenkins left. 4 wins in 3 years ...offense 20-25 pts a game worse, defense just as bad or worse...this leads me to believe they were better off with the R@S than without it.

Jack Pardee said it they went to the R@S because it would not have made sense to him to run the same schemes as Texas and A@M when they couldnt recruit the same kids .That A@M team had like 6-7 future defensive first rd picks on its team ,so they could have been successful doing nearly anything. I doubt June Jones would be successful in Hawaii going 2 TE 2 wr and trying to run Zone , Power etc. Gilbride has basically fallen on his face going with more TEs and getting away from the r@S.

How many teams even tried the Shoot at the college level or in the pros? Dan Henning and Joe Bugel both flopped TWICE at the pro level running the Gibbs stuff but you never hear about that. Not tomention all the WCO failures. My main concern is hs anyway .The Wing T isnt even used at the major college level anymore but it still is a tough offense to defend if run right. I think if youre a team full of cheetahs in a league full of rhinos it(R@S) has validity.

Oh and by the way, the defense can always bring one more than you can block. I have a R@S cutup tape that has plays from that A@M game on it and Ware ignores his open hot reads to try to go for the big play, which is when they have problems. I see the same thing a lot with Timmy Chang ignoring open guys short to go for the home run. And who says if you bring in a slot in now and then to block ,youre not R@S? Jenkins and Mouse Davis both hated the term, preferring the "Multiple Adjusting Pass Offense" and the" Silver Stretch "monikers respectively.

COMMON COACHING ERRORS AND HOW TO AVIOD THEM

GENERAL COMMENTS: The best coach is the one who makes the fewest mistakes; the one who does the best teaching job; the one who is the best organizer. Writing the X's & O's is not the most important thing. There are 22 variables in a football game. Coach must be a salesman to the extent that when his team loses, they don't blame him or the offensive and/or defensive system, but rather themselves.

ERRORS IN TEACHING METHODS:
FIRST = FAILURE TO USE TIME EFFICIENTLY. Failure to recognize the time factor available to get the job done. Planning makes for valuable use of time. Too long on any one thing produces boredom. When boredom comes in, learning goes out. Football players have a short attention span. Hold to time schedule.
SECOND = FAILURE TO EXPLAIN THE PURPOSE OF THE DRILL. Tell the boy WHY he is doing what he is trying to accomplish and he will do a better job. Explain WHY, then show HOW.
THIRD = IMPROPER TEACHING PROGRESSION. You can't teach a boy how to block until he has learned stance. If he hasn't learned stance, he doesn't know how to step out of the stance into the block.
FOURTH = TOO MUCH VERBAL INSTRUCTION ON THE FIELD. How much can boy learn from your verbal instruction with his helmet on, he's breathing hard, he aches, he's stunned, etc. Do WHO and WHY in chalk talk. Teach assignments before hitting the field. Correct on the field. Teach — no! (HOW is taught on the field — not WHO & WHY).
FIFTH = TOO MUCH DEMONSTRATION BY COACH. How much you know is not important. How much player knows is.
SIXTH = BEING ON THE FIELD TOO LONG. Better to have a team eager to play rather than physically tired. How long to practice is a judgment factor. Cut down as season goes along — not going to change mechanical ability late in season. Only one rule never violated at Oklahoma. If one coach on staff feels practice too long, we must cut it down. More boys play poorly because they practiced too long than boys playing poorly because they didn't practice long enough.

ERRORS IN TACTICS AND STRATEGY:
FIRST = TACTICS AND VICTORY. You get very few victories on tactics. Victories come if you can out block, out tackle, out fundamental your opponent. Red Sanders quote: "Intimidate them physically"! Outmaneuver — no. Defeat — yes.
SECOND = CLEAR CUT PHILOSOPHY A MUST. Decide on an offense and defense that will suit your personnel then stick to it. Depth of morale can be determined by a kid's reaction to a loss. If morale deep, they'll blame themselves. If morale shallow, they'll blame you.
THIRD = TOO MANY PLAYS AND DEFENSES. Subtract the number of different plays used in the game from the total number of plays you practiced. If this number is too large you better get rid of some plays. It is difficult enough to know when to run off- tackle, but if you have four ways to run off-tackle, you will never get the right play. Beauty of Split-T was it's very limited number of plays

ERRORS IN JUDGMENT:
FIRST = BE REALISTIC ABOUT PLAYER'S ABILITY. Don't just put an X or an O on the board. Put up the boy's name. Immediately his limitations affect the offense or defense you put up. Whale of a lot of difference between Dick Butkus and Humpty Dumpty.
SECOND = WHEN CHIPS ARE DOWN, BEST PLAYERS ARE IN THE GAME. It is a mistake to be able to play blue chippers only one way. Say best kid you have can only go on offense. Say opponent has ball for 45 minutes. These are 45 minutes he cannot help you.

ERRORS IN OFF FIELD RELATIONSHIP:
FIRST = RELATIONSHIP WITH OTHER FACULTY MEMBERS. The environment that exists has a lot to do with winning or losing. If they are with you, your job is easier. If they are against you, you're in trouble. Work on a program of how to win friends and influence faculty members.
SECOND = ORGANIZE A MOTHER'S CLUB. Get mother on your side by pointing out to her what he can get out of football besides winning games.
THIRD = PRESS, TV, AND RADIO. Straight up fact of life that the great majority of people get their impression of you from what they read in the paper, see on TV, or hear on radio. Their jobs depend on info. Get it to them to make their jobs easier. Get these people on your side. Let them know what you're doing. They will interpret what you're doing in the way you want it interpreted if they are with you.

ERRORS IN DEVELOPING MORALE (MORALE IS TO THE PHYSICAL AS 4 IS TO 1).
FIRST = FOOTBALL BEGINS WITH MORALE! Once you get morale, it is easy to maintain. How to get it is a problem.
SECOND = HOW TO LOSE MORALE. Do what you said you're going to do. Don't say we're going to practice 1 ½ hours and go 2 ½ hours. Training rules — if you're not going to enforce them, don't have them.
THIRD = MORALE STEMS FROM DISCIPLINE.
FOURTH = TREAT PLAYERS AS A PERSON. If he feels you are interested in him only as a football player, he won't go all out for you. If you are interested in his academics, his personal problems, etc. and he knows this, he'll go all out for you. Convince him that football is good for his future.
FIFTH = One year, Knute Rockne had 2 QB's. Under great athlete, team failed; under mediocre QB, team succeeded. Why? Captain's reply — "the great athlete is trying to show how good HE is. The TEAM is trying to make the average guy look good".

COACH IN YOUR OWN WAY:
FIRST = DON'T COPY! Note clinicians and their personalities. ALL different ways of being successful. Plan carefully in the off season. Can't take golf lessons between the 8th green and 9th tee.

CONCLUDING REMARKS: The man who is best organized and does the best teaching job, is the best coach.
