When defenses do not move guys out of the box b/c they want to force us to complete our automatic throws consistantly. The smart coaches in our league new we still wanted to run the ball, and basically challenged our QB and recievers to beat them instead of our talented RB. Sometimes it worked and sometimes it did not but this is what gave us the most trouble in the gun. We plan on using it more this coming season (than last season) so we will have to work on completing the bubble screen to near 100%, and get 4 yards.

If you stuggle throwing the ball you cannot get teams to remove guys from the box, so you might as well go back under center with 2TEs and run the ball that way.

To be perfectly honest we never got good at it. Our general rule was if the slot could catch the ball and get 4 yards then he was open. What that translated to was if a defender was aligned 3 yards inside him. What would happend to us is the defense would align 7 or 8 in the box and our QB would make the check then hit the reciever in the numbers and the kid would drop it. We started putting our best WR is the slot to the wideside to try and force a mismatch if we ran bubble, but I have to credit the guys I coach against b/c they were able to do some good thigns to stop us. One thing about the bubble is it is a tough pass to complete when the reciever is running away from the QB. An idea I got from another coach here in MN is the slot just takes 2 steps, stops and turns back to the QB. It sacrifices some of the speed but it increases your completion percentage. The best material I have seen on this subject is by Dick Olin of Baytown Lee. They throw all the time. Drew Tate, now the QB for Iowa, was one of his QBs. If you go to www.nikecoyfootball.com they have free articles and one of them used to be this one. Not sure if it is still on the site.

well, I like the simplicity of how you figured out if he is open enough, that is something the kids can learn that doesn't get all width and numbers technical,
i like organic stuff like that
how often would you say you checked it?

we run the crap out of bubble (not as much as olin, but few do as much as him)
we are looking to be more balanced in our gun formations, in the past we were really heavy pass and we could get people out of the box, so we are looking at how to blend both run and pass together with some easy checks, like the automatic to bubble if it is just wide open

do you run any jets out of your gun stuff?

Off hand I cannot say how many times we did it. We would only check it if we had an internal run called and they had too many guys for us to block. One concept we worked on was the RB and OL ran Dart, and the 4 WRs ran bubble. The QB counted the box and if we had the numbers took the snap and handed off. If we had outside leverage he took the snap and threw the bubble. No audible was ever made. We called it "Dart Combo" and it was out most effective way of running it. This way we could go fast at the LOS without making a check. If we threw the bubble it looked like play action. If we did hand off the OLB did have the added element of spying those slots running outside away from them. We hardly did it this year since we did not have the personnel to execute this offense well.
