Just got back from Nike, Atlantic City and heard Urban Meyer speak. He was very good. Here are some notes you guys.
"offensive football is a 10 yard game ... keep winning the 10 yard games"
Running the football (basic philosophy)
1) equate the #'s
- one high safety, you're even so run the football
- two high safeties, you're plus one so run the football
- no high safeties, you're minus one so throw or option
2) all 1st level players must be accounted for (blocked). If not then checking to "read now", "read oscar" or "triple"
Passing the football (basic philosophy)
1) protection
- you must block the backside
- never give up a/b gap penetration
2) no sacks (equates to not getting any third and longs)
- the QB must get the ball off
RB's alignment and zone steps
- Qb is at 5 yards, RB is at 6 and split outside leg of guard
- open, shuffle, shuffle
- "slow to, fast thru". He must be slow to the mesh (patient) to set up the nose and allow the read to develop. The QB must get full extension on the mesh.
- read the 1st defender off the center.
- "press the LOS"
- on the cutback they use a "jump cut"
Zone blocking
- there's always one block that's difficult. Usually it's the on the one tech. because most defenses like to put the three tech. away from the back.
They have three different answers in running the zone
1) issues on the frontside
- "read now" which is a bubble screen to the playside because they have overloaded the box
- "read oscar" which puts the ps slot in motion towards the center to add an additional blocker to the edge
2) issues on the backside
- "triple" which is their triple option
