Hey i am wondering if you could describe how you throw uncovered. Obviously we want to make the defense cover down, but i am probably looking to do this 99% of the time now. I am really interested in how you teach the routes? If i had a two receiver set, would you run bubble or would you throw to the uncovered receiver with some type of quick screen (one step throw)? If were throwing un-covered to a single receiver side, how would you go about it? i've read about (shuffle, shuffle, catch and run) or ive seen the one step hitch. Just looking for an opinion and maybe whats worked well for you all.
Let me start by saying we are a Gun spread offense. When we are presented with an uncovered or a situation where the OLB/SS is cheating to the box at the snap we will run a playaction bubble. Let's say for instance that the left slot is identified as being uncovered, we will fake zone play to our right to further uncover our receiver by drawing the OLB/SS further into the box. The bubble route run by the receiver is not the same bubble route we run normally so a little teaching time is required. We tell the slot to take 2 lateral shuffle steps away from the Box then turn his # toward the QB. He will be sationary when he catches the ball but if you can time it up right it is as though he is jogging in place so that he can immediately get upfield. We want this pass to have a 100% completion % on this play or the defense will have advantage. As far as the one receiver side goes, throw the hitch till they stop it.
I would simply explain to my kids that if you can get 4 yards before you make contact with any defender you are uncovered. Usually this is based on the depth of the safety or the leverage that the inside receiver has on the OLB.
I have heard of this run 2 ways. #1 use hand signals or code words between the QB and the WR. #2 Give the QB and receiver free reign to use it when ever possible. By this I mean, tell your receiver that if they are uncovered to expect the ball within the first 3 steps of their route. If the ball is not delivered, tell them to continue on the path of their original route.
On any pass play, our QB has three reads before the snap of the ball in this order: #1 throw the hitch anytime you have an off corner (take all the free yards you can get), #2 throw uncovered to force the defense to spread out and cover down on receivers, #3 throw the bubble to any slot receiver that has inside leverage on the OLB. These three reads pretain to only 1st and 2nd down. On 3rd down, use best judgement. I understand that many people do not want to give their QBs this type of freedom but remember that your kids will do what they are taught. Hope that helps.
