JC - the MIRROR was like this (out of PRO 4-3);
OLB's = 2 1/2 ft outside TE (or ghost TE). Crash on inward squeeze contain path (PITCH on option). Rush passer if pass develops - no coverage resp.
DE's = Line up IN C gap. As the Tackle blocks down (on option) close to his inside foot heel depth & take FB dive on triple option (if you read QB pull ball - take QB).
DT's = 3 Tech on Guards. Take FB on triple option.
MLB = Line up with toes slightly deeper than the heels of DT's, facing Center, & key FB. Mirror FB - take him on runs, & cover him if he releases on pass (if he doesn't go out - flow out thru hook zone to side he fakes).
INVERTED SAFETIES (key to the defense) = 5 1/2 yds deep on outside shoulder of HB your side. Man to man on HB & mirror him on all runs (go where he goes regardless if he is carrying or blocking). A) If HB leads on OLB - play from QB TO PITCH. B) If HB load blocks DE - play the QB. C) If he goes to OPPOSITE side of where you align - take the QB CUTBACK on option inside/out (important). You had 2 Safeties on the QB no matter to which side the option came.
CORNERS = 6 to 7 yds deep on the ends. You are M/M on passes. If YOU are on TE & he blocks - QUICK RUN SUPPORT.
The REASON this was called "MIRROR" was not only in that the MLB & the 2 inverted Safeties "mirrored the movement" of the FB & HB's, but their alignment was a "mirror image" of the Wishbone formation (as you will see when you draw it).
This beat Texas in 1971, but we had a lot more success in "Okie Dog Pinch" (also decsribed in my post of Feb 25, at 9:22) on the thread on "HISTORY OF THE FLEXBONE".
