Just looking for what others teach their QB's on the Shotgun Zone play. Last year we ran this play the West Virginia way with the back taking 2 steps past the mesh, so our QB's were much more square. I just told them to take a short slightly backwards step with the foot closest to the back and allow the RB to run over their front foot. This year I am going to attempt to run this play as similar as I can to Utah, by that I mean having the back a 1/2 yard behind the QB attacking a little more downhill as to have a better oppurtunity of getting the cutback. I have some Utah gametape but I can not seem to get an exact beat on exactly what their QB's steps are. I am a perfectionist when it comes to this stuff. Any help would be appreciated.
Coach, The QB is 4 1/2 and RB is on the QB's heels. The RB takes a drop step wiht his inside foot and goe to the ball. It is the RB's responsibility to get the ball, not the QB to hand it to him. We had very few fumbles doing this. This way the QB can eye the DE at all times. What we teach is that the QB receives the snap and drops his foot nearest to the RB at a 45 degree angle and points the ball at the DE. If the DE crosses the ball, pull. If not, give and boot. We do not ride the mesh. We want to give the QB as long of a read as we can. This will cause him to hesitate a bit even if he pulls and the DE will take one more step to the RB. Just what we do.
