Any good mat drills?

What are mat drills? I know they are a toughness/conditioning drill but other than that I'm pretty much clueless. Can anyone help me out?

I remember mat drills being the most hated form of pre dawn torture ever created for football players! I remember how intense they were and exhausting. One story has them coming from Florida State's staff as they use to do them religiously, and when their staff transferred to UCF - we did them 2-3 times a week in the Winter. We did a 3 station combo including mat drills that was highly effective. Our Mat drills were basically team agility drills done on wrestling mats in a multi-purpose room or gym, or they can be done outside as well. (I do that now with my team) It involves coordinated drills such as quarter eagles, 2 point seat rolls, 4 point seat rolls, front to backs, monkey rolls, gorilla jumps, hand spinners, side to side shuffles, and more. The players line up in 3-4 lines and the first guys dive out to perform the drill while the second line gets in football position awaiting their opportunity. The diving line comes up chopping their feet and at the direction of the coach they will do 4-5 reps of whatever is being asked of them. He gives an "out" call and the players somersault(or not, your call) and run down the floor 10-15 yards to another coach and break down chopping their feet with intensity and responses to the coach verbally and then he breaks them out to get back in line. done properly it is loud and moves very fast and very intense. The kids get into it and it really helps their feet and coordination - great stuff. We would do 8 exercises on the mats, and the second station was bag jumps(30 second jumps over a cylinder dummy or small agility dummy), shuttle run in groups of 3, and jump rope in various forms, and the third area was form running exercises. We would rotate the three areas in 20 minute windows and you'd be toast in 1 hour. You can incorporate plyo training and core instability exercises as a fourth station. Hope that helps.

The drills are relatively simple, the issue is synchronization and quickness along with great emotion. I would be happy to get more specific if need be on these things - just let me know which ones aren't clear to you. The plyo and core work has lots of videos on the market on that stuff.
