I have been thinking about the idea of FUNCTIONAL STRENGTH for quite some time. I am so tired of wasting my time bench pressing and doing these other so called traditional lifts. Are they really helping my guys become the strongest FB players possible? Yes they do build overal strength, but does it really help the FB player. I am wandering what lifts you guys do with your kids that are non-traditional.
Here is one of my exercises: The Squat Press.
Player takes 2 dumbells and hold them in hands and rests the dumbell on shoulders (as if he was going to military press it). With wts on shoulders, player does a deep squat keeping wts on shoulders and explodes upwards. When he reaches the peak of his squat, he then lifts the dumbells over his head. This is one complete motion from the squat to the press. Then dumbells come back down to the shoulders. Rest for 1 count. and do it again.
I believe this exercise works the entire body, the legs, the shoulders, the core, etc. Plus, it is an explosion from the toes, through the hips and using the arms and shoulders.
I have a relatively small program with a bunch of athletes. I put this in this December and we do 2 sets of 10-12 reps twice a week in a Cycle workout. Most players could barely do 30's with any type of control. Now most of the guys are using 40-60 lb dumbells and mastering this lift.
I would love to hear some input on this. I got this exercise from a kick-boxer / former college FB player who trains kick-boxers.
