Gun Counter read with option away

That is a good question coach about the D end sitting and waiting to read. We had some trouble with this later on in the season when other teams were watching film and trying to find out how to attack the read play. What this kind of offense does is forces the defense to play assignment football. So eventually we told our QB to make that look a give read. But what I like most about this is that come week whatever when you play a zone read football team the d coordinator is going to have to break some of his rules that he has taught his players all season. At least around the area I coach, you never see anykind of gun option offense. I have been a defensive coach in the past and I am a firm believer that you have to close that gap with that O lineman that is blocking down or pulling. My d coordinator and I love this arguement.

But yes to answer your question it is a give read.

Are you talking about the H option with the slot reciever that Utah has made famous? I think I am not getting that one. The slot reciever would come across the play underneath and become the shovel guy. How does this work off of the counter look? Actually if you look at the play I was describing it is not even really a traditional counter play. The back does not take any kind of counter step what so ever. The counter action I guess you could say would come from the option or the Qb counter back the other way. So basically we run the same rules in the backfield as if it were an inside zone read play but now you have pulling lineman that are leading up. Obviously the aiming point of the rb is changed, but it looks more like an inside zone play but know you have outnumbered the defense.

What is also a great compliment off of this play is the QB counter. I am sure you have seen this on paper before. Qb fakes the inside zone look but pulls and he becomes the RB. Backside guard and tackle pull on the kick out turn up scheme and it looks now like a QB zone option but the Qb turns it up inside of his pulling lineman. You can also have the slot wr to the playside backpedel to make it look like zone option. We found out that this often makes that olb stretch out and come up field to defend the option and we end up running right underneath that seem between the inside lb chasing the zone fake and the olb covering option. These two plays were money all year for us!

Not really the H option that Utah is running.

I was thinking more of a true Shovel underneath to the Slot.

QB takes his regular zone read steps, and the back meshes with him - as the slot comes in motion in between the LOS and the depth of the RB/QB. As the QB disconnects from the read he shovels it underneath to the slot reciever, who follows the perhaps the block of the BSG on a trap scheme.

On another note:

I agree with both you and Tog... I am an up the gut guy. I love running the ball. The more I look at the Spread Gun Option... I really see it as a running formation that present so much misdirection and assignments for the defense it really gives them fits. So I'm compelled to learn more about it.

One thing I'd love to do is switch between compressed formations (say an Ace back with 2TE and a Wing.. with 1 FL) and a Spread Gun. I can see the 'contraction and expansion' of the formations really giving them fits.

The true counter gt is susceptible to the backside linebacker run through behind the pullers if eveyone involved is a great athlete. Out of doubles gun, with no TE, the dart is a more sound play all the way around than gt in my mind. The thing that makes counter gt still my favorite play is the pounding those de's take, and that at my level the ol pulling are so slow and the linebackers reading are not good enough to really get underneath it all and mess it up.

We just angle back and then get to full speed when we are a yard outside the tackle which is when we snap it. The jet guy always gets the ball, or the fake, or at least right of way. Then we run the normal zone t and counter read plays off of it, to the qb, to the rb, into and away from the rocket. It makes it like 25 plays or so, all off of 2 basic looks up front.

I found it interesting that Utah never really ran an outside zone play. What do you guys think on the outside zone vs. the inside zone look. I never had any success with the outside zone. I would appreciate your guys opinion on this.

Do you run the gt counter along with the dart and zone t? Do you have both of those schemes in your playbook? Are do you rely on the dart / zone t vs the gt counter.

Tog, I'm kinda curious. Can you describe what you know about that Slot-T offense (hybrid south texas style wing-t stuff), even where or who to talk to about more information. I've seen and read all sorts of info on the other offenses you speak of but I'm curious how close to the wing-t the slot-t is. What makes it different and so much of an equalizer? Just trying to learn what I can. Thanks a lot.
