Lou, having coached most of my career in Florida, I can attest to the fact that it is great football. Great athletes, great traditions, great fans, etc. But, I also coached in Georgia and that is great football too! They have beaten the Florida All Stars on a regular basis here of late and the pay is WAY better! Alabama and virginia are HS hot beds too! Hit me on my private email, I want to talk with you on a nonrelated topic if you have time.

we have it here in Louisiana. it is great for experimenting with new twists, personnel, or schemes; young kids get some work; and find back ups ( when starter is in another sport ).but some teams choose not to have it for some of these reasons: 1. lose players to injuries 2. lose players who have to make a choice to follow rules... ex. missing practice for work, AAU basketball, summer league practice and games... etc. 3. not all of your coaches are there for practice... ex. spring sport in playoffs, regional tournaments, or state tournaments 4. practices cut short for sport banquets, drivers education, graduation ceremonies, etc. ( mandatory by administration)
we may not have it next year because of some of the problems listed above. other than the hitting aspect of practice we can get the other things during pe two days a week.
just my two cents
Ted Kennedy's car has killed more people than my GUNS!!!
Had the opportunity to coach against the Massillon Tigers in '87 (won up there) and '89 (lost at home) when I coached at Middletown, Ohio h.s. - great athletic tradition (home of Chris Carter, Butch Carter, Todd Bell, Jerry Lucas, and its where Tiger Ellison invented the Run in Shoot back in the 40s - blessed to have the opportunity to present him with an award at a Banquet before he passed). Also scrimmaged them from '93-'95. USA Today voted the Massillon/Canton McKinley (their home field is the Pro Football Hall of Fame!) game the greatest rivalry in the country! I still remember Chris Speilman (Massillon/Ohio St./Detroit Lions) being on the Wheaties box his senior year of high school!
Once a year at the end of July before camp we shut down everything and go on a team trip. We rent travel busses, watch football movies (some of which have to be edited by the head coach - like the "Go Tigers" Massillon movie), etc. It's a great team building event which our players never forget. We are very fortunate to be close to a lot of colleges and football museums. One trip we take once every 2-3 years is up to Canton/Massillon. We tour both McKinley and Massillon's (outrageous) facilities, visit the Hall of Fame, and eat at Chris Speilman's (football memorabilia) restaraunt. We leave about 6 AM and don't get home until after midnight - that's a lot of time on a bus together . . . . but that's the point! Other trips: South Bend, Indiana - Notre Dame and the College Football Hall of Fame; Indianapolis - NCAA Hall of Champions, Butler Univ., Univ. of Indianapolis; Columbus - OSU; Cincy - Bengals facilities, UC; Cleveland - Browns facility, Mount Union College = Div. III National Champs about every year!
I agree with you coaches - great high school football: Florida, Georgia, Ohio, Pennsylvania, California, Texas, Virginia is very underrated but is a recruiting hot bed, Alabama. The Top 4-5 schools in Kentucky (Louisville area) and Indiana are great also = whipped the big school champs form Ohio!
Also got demolished by Brockton, Mass. in '94 - they were "nasty!" (in a good way)
You men might be surprised which state has produced the most members of the NFL Hall of Fame (from my team trip research) . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Mississippi!
Lastly, last week they just celebrated the anniversary of the first professional football game ever played - here in my hometown of Dayton, Ohio by the Dayton Triangles vs. . . . . . I can't remember who the other team was)
Thanks for your post, coach. Certainly sounds like tradition abounds in Ohio! Isn't it great to play the really big programs? I was fortunate in my HS coaching to coach at the really big schools for the most part, although I had small school time also. They have the funding, they have the coaches, they have the facilities, they just have an atmosphere about them that is really special, at least to me. I have worked at a school that averaged 1000 fans and I have worked at a school that averaged 8,000 fans per game, with our arch rival being the climax (last game) that we drew 28,000 fans to view. The trips, the Div1-A schools that we took our kids to each year Fla, Fla State, Clemson, Miami, etc. were always great as were the recruiters and HC's who always came from the big colleges to host social shindigs for us to build that rapport so that we would help them with our blue chippers (which we did, of course). Bobby Ross, when HFC at Georgia Tech used to host one that was first class! Nice to chat with you.
