Installing Today’s Hybrid Pistol Offense Run & Pass from Top to Bottom
This manual provides you with the full offensive line, receiver, and quarterback mechanics for installing each offensive play presented. Coach Campbell has left no stone unturned for implementing today’s Pistol Offense into your program.
Here in Texas, we get one of two extremes; they are either air-it-out spread teams, or they run the option (Emory Bellard and Bill Yeoman are still having their effect). I know of one major 5A power (Dallas Carter) that runs the wing-T. I don't know of any teams that run the double-wing or single wing offense. We have a few teams that run the shotgun option/spread, one of which almost took down the HS national champions last season (Lufkin v. Southlake Carroll) in the state semi-finals. What do the high schools run in your area? How closely do you try to match your offense to what they do?
The better teams generally run the ball really really well no matter what formation or system they choose. that said, the two wing- t teams in the area are usually contenders, the spread and chuck it up teams are usually pretenders. the pro_i teams are middle of the pack or poor unless they have great talent(big schools). Kutztown(very small school), where I coach scrapped their multiple everythign offense and went very basic with a power wishbone look(liek a youth offense) and had a winning season for the first time since 1983 and the funny part, every one thought it was a "rebuilding" year because we lost 17 dedicated seniors ...thats 17 out of 25 players! this year the entire oline returns, we have two backs that run sub 4.6 and a tough sophmore qb...we had best pound the rock! I would love it if our hs coach would run the dw,...but im a caveman...what can i say?
The Woodlands Highschool, TX runs the spread. They generally do pretty well every year (top ten in state) They generally end up sending several kids to Texas Tech each year.
The new College Park High School that is opening in The Woodlands, Tx this year is going to run the wishbone option attack (at least for the first year) that could be interesting.
Evangel Christian in Shreveport runs the spread as well as Springdale High in Arkansas. Both these teams will compete for their respected state championships this year. I think they both play each other as well, what a game that will be.
For those that don't know, Springdale High is loaded this year. They might have as many as ten kids go D1. There are 5 kids that every college in the country wants.
I don't mimic the spread (The Woodlands High) at my level, I run the Single Wing. The kids will have to wait a couple of years before they start throwing the ball around if they play for me!!!!

Evangel Christian holds kids back a year with their 8 Plus program, so they are 19 yr olds playing against 16-18 yr old opposition, i.e. men against boys. I laughed when De La Salle kicked their butts on national television. I really have no respect for Evangel, b/c their players flameout once they get to college. Everyone likes to rave about their spread offense, but I think most people would be deadly on offense if they featured men on their team, who basically do nothing but practice and have PE all day their senior year. Southlake runs the same offense from pee wee all the way up through the high school, and all of the teams are the Dragons. It is an effective way to install pride and a sense of tradition.
Last year I saw one of the most potent offenses I've ever seen at the high school level. It was Byrnes High School in South Carolina. They ran the spread and passed, passed, and passed some more. In the state championship they obliterated their competition and brought in the second string. All they knew was wide open. It was like watching Urban Meyer's Utah offense at the high school level. The freaking second string was running the score up in the fourth quarter. I told my son, "That's all they know. It seems they were trying but they could not even stop the scoring. That was the 4A division though.
In the "Big 16"the champions are usually running the I formation with play action.
Hey Lurker: I moved from the Upstate last spring and I know what you mean. Greer and Greenville High were also very competitive using Gun Passing and Option schemes. Greg B Now in Powhatan

Our wonderful high school program will run a split back veer offense and a 4-2-5 defense this season. This will be the 4th straight year that they've ran a different offense and defense. This is a true story enjoy it: Two weeks ago I ran into the DC at the high school I asked what defense did you guys run last year. His response was I don't really know what it wa called. After a look of disbelief I said are you serious?? Anyway after 5 minutes of talking to him I finally think they ran a 4-4. I asked do you just run the 4-4 base all the time? He said why. I said because in the Wamego game you had 1 DB covering a trips left set. He said we run our base defense no matter what. I said I don't even left 1 DB cover 3 Wr's in youth ball. Then I asked do you guys go to any coaching clinics?? He said no they don't have time and all the coaches agreed that June and July was there so called off time. And starting on August 1st, 13 days before practice starts they'll start discussing football. Keep in mind we have a record of 6-39 the last 5 yrs. We are the biggest school in our league as well. I told him as a youth coach which is 6th grade( I basically look at it as the same as a jr. high program) that I'm looking at football stuff every single day. And I don't have summers off. Listen I know that i've moaned many times about this subject but then the thing that pissed me off more than anything was. He said you and your staff can come up on August 1st and learn some x's and o's if you like. I just said yeah ok and walked off.
I'm a defensive line coach. I wouldn't get mad at the DC. It seems his head coach should be the one to direct your frustration at. In my first year at the varsity level, I went to the Mega Clinic in Atlanta and heard some great speakers. In December, I went down with my head coach to Auburn University and attended practice. I email or call the D tackles coach there regularly. He sends me drill tapes every time they make a new one. Some I do on my own, but most I did with the HC. If the HC at your HS isn't making an effort to coach his coaches, then he is staring at the unemployment line.
I hope to work some summer camps next summer. I wanted to this year, but my HC took a DC job and I was interim HC until his replacement was hired. The HC was there for the last week of drills. What kind of kids do you have at this HS? What kind of facilities? Let me know when they start looking to replace him. We run the 4-3 on defense and will be running the wishbone on offense this fall. The wishbone fits our offense skilll guys better (we have none).
Personally, I like a two back and one back offense. I also like the bone.
1 school runs the I back Syracuse Freeze option 1 school runs the Florida State I back/spread gun 1 school runs the pro I (HC is the former Oregon Duck QB Chris Miller) 3 schools run the Spread (Texas Tech) stuff 1 school used to run the split back veer but has a new coach, also an Oregon football alumni 1 school runs the wing-t fromthe 3x1 spread and us: new HC runs the Urban Meyer Spread option for the last 2 years
so there we go.

I attended the Atlanta Mega Clinic. I attended the presentations of Coach Paul Connor, Bill Zwaan, Bruce Cobleigh, and just for kicks I also sat in on a session presented by Mike Emendorfer .
In Kansas, they care more about basketball than they do football. I'm not surprised those coaches are so lazy now. You'd think the school board and parents would demand more success, though.
saintrad,
You in Oregon?
I call Meyer's offense the shotgun single wing, b/c that is what it looks like to me. How has it been working out for y'all?
I always liked Herman Boone's (Denzel Washington) quote in "Remember the Titans" on his offense: "I run 6 plays, split veer option; it's like Novocaine, give it time, it always works."
