I dont run OSV from the flexbone but I will throw out my 2 cents anyway.
On OSV your dive read will always be the EMLOS. You can use a number of different defenders for your pitch read depending on how you choose to scheme the play. Your TE or Wing will release up to a 2nd level defender. Everyone else will combo block up to a linebacker.
We run outside veer from flexbone and we will block whomever is covering the Offensive tackle and our dive key is the next man on/off the L.O.S.We face a lot of teams who don't cover the SB so we double with the SB and Offensive Tackle and read the next man.We have been very successful with this play and I don't see any college teams do this.
IF YOUR NOT READING THE EMLOS, WHOMEVER THAT HAPPENS TO BE, THEN YOUR BREAKING AN IORNCLAD RULE OF THE OSV. WHEN YOU BREAK THE RULES, THEN YOUR RUNNING SOMETHING ELSE.
Just my opinion, no offense intended whatsoever.

No offense taken.I call it outside veer because our aiming point of the FB is a hole wider;up the Tackle's butt.Inside veer is up the Guard's butt, and Midline veer is up the Center's butt. When I say veer, it tells my QB to read the next man outside the FB's aiming point. It tells the linemen to double at the point of attack and it tells the SB to Arc block. If I want the SB to block something differently,I add another word for him, like "Seal" tells him to go to LB,"Special"tells him to go to CB,"Base" tells him man up,etc.I don't like the old saying,"If you don't read the end man on the line of scrimmage,it is not outside veer."The reason I don't like it because you can run inside veer to a 1-tech and 5-tech,and you read the DE for dive/keep if the DE is a 5-tech.Take the same front and double the 5-tech,dive the FB up the O-Tackle's butt, and I just ran outside veer !! QB reads the next man for dive/keep on or off the L.O.S.It is just my terminology. What do you do if you have a 7-tech DE,and you are running outside veer?Do you leave him unblocked and dive the FB right in his face so the 7-tech tackle's FB and turn it into a double option?Good luck to all!!!! lotiefs@bellsouth.net if you want to trade some game film or cut-ups.I would love to take some of your ideas and add them to my playbook. You can have some of mine too!!!!!
Yes, Coach..We do that. We double a 5 or a 6. If we have a 7 tech, he better tackle the FB or he is running down the field. If he takes the FB, then it is QB and TB 2 on 1 on the Force.
We will double the 7-tech to ILB and read the SS for dive/keep,if my O-Guard can handle a 3-tech,or we will run it the other way,or change the play.I don't like the defense dictating who has dive,QB,pitch by alignment.Of course, this changes with Midline,Inside,or Outside Veer.Do you find a lot of defenses pre determine who has dive,QB and pitch no matter what the offensive play is?I hear this talk a lot at clinics and I don't agree.I tell my DL,tackle dive only if it is one gap near you,if not play QB,or next threat.LB's tackle dive only if their is daylight for the back.If no daylight, scrape to next threat.Does anyone else do this?
Thanks for the rest of the info on your blocking scheme.
Yes I have coached it for over 14 years. Actually did that first and then moved into fb. Try to get alot of those fundamentals into fb because it can help so much. Really pisses me off when I hear people speak at clinics, especially big college coaches, and say that basketball is the best thing for lineman to do to help their footwork and blocking techniques. I'll take my guy over a bb guy any day of the weak, lowering level, controlling hips, inside postion, balance, moving feet to stay balanced and not jumping around, etc. and the complete toughness it takes is what I want from guys.
Got off the subject though, I saw your other post about just calling it OV, I like the directions to the QB and the blocking is similar to ours. We also have different terms for the blocking from the outside to make it easier on the kids.
As with your defensive keys we usually have the guys play their responsibilities, but we've had some "winners" before that we just used the old K.I.S.S method, and gave guys direct assignments for every play. It made us vulnerable to some things especially when the offense would change their formation and our guys had to think just a little, but it was better than everyone trying to figure out who had the ball and running around like chickens with their heads cut off. (I apologize to any chickens that may have been offended) I don't like having to do that, but when you're working with "rocket surgeons" you have to do what you have to do.
I am with you about wrestling Ankleride. It not only helps physically,it makes a kid tough and responsible.Where do you coach? What do y'all run on offense/defense?E-mail me if you want to trade film/ideas. lotiefs@bellsouth.net.I'm in Louisiana.
