Installing Today’s Hybrid Pistol Offense Run & Pass from Top to Bottom
This manual provides you with the full offensive line, receiver, and quarterback mechanics for installing each offensive play presented. Coach Campbell has left no stone unturned for implementing today’s Pistol Offense into your program.
Do any of you have any good drills or teaching methods for this? We don't zone block and we want our OL to get off and beat the D across the neutral zone. Do any of you have anything good for this?
Excellent Choice.
"You can't expect different results unless you do something different."
1. Explode out.
2. Short first step (1/2 way to fingers of down hand; knee rolls over toe – NOT behind).
3. Back flat.
4. Bull neck.
5. Proper aiming point (aim face at throat of DLM; base of #’s of LB). Look the block in.
6. Second step MUST be beyond first step to win. Make contact on second step (most important step). Hit 1 yard through defender.
7. Whip the arms.
8. Blocking surface (drive the elbows inside & make contact with a triangle of hat & hands (thumbs up) to a lockout; contact the short ribs & “lift him out of his socks” on a 45 degree angle with fork lift motion).
9. Shoot the hips (unlock the power).
10. Driving steps.
11. Feet under you – good base.
12. Maintain contact.
13. 2nd & 3rd effort.
QUESTION: When do you whip the defender?
ANSWER: When he tries to escape the block – you come alive and finish (STAY ON BLOCK).
A couple of things that we do to get kids to explode off the line:
1. Basketball drop. I stand about 5 paces away with a basketball in my hand. On hut, I drop the basketball to hit the grass. They have to come out of their stance and obtain the ball prior to the second touch of the grass.
2. I get them on the one-man. I take 5 long paces and stand with a stop watch. I time them on how long it takes them to clear me with the one-man. If I recall correctly, under 3 seconds was good. Then do it with the 7 man.
Remind them that 90% of blocks are won/lost by who makes first contact (Mudd).
we don't use a basketball but we do use tennis balls. It is good AND competitive.
We also do Sprints up hill (@ 45 degrees) for 5 to 10 yards. We have a heated delivery ramp for cafeteria, etc. because our school is on a hill so we can use it in the winter too.
