Installing Today’s Hybrid Pistol Offense Run & Pass from Top to Bottom
This manual provides you with the full offensive line, receiver, and quarterback mechanics for installing each offensive play presented. Coach Campbell has left no stone unturned for implementing today’s Pistol Offense into your program.
Does running the option require that you have a good runner at QB? Our situation for next year will be that we have a very disciplined and intelligent QB who would make the proper read every time. Unfortunately, he is a below-average runner.
I am afraid that if we ran option plays, defenses would simply dictate by assignment that he get the football and we would end up having the weakest member of our tandem carrying the rock.
If they totally leave him alone he will hurt them even as a below average runner. He gets you five, its a win. If he makes good decisions he can move the ball.
Coach,
What are you doing to help him GET BETTER at those skills?
I think THESE types of things are what make great coaches.
make him better. Coach him.
Best wishes!
Approach it from the opposite point of view. Rather than running the option and allowing the defense to dictate who gets the ball, set up your blocking schemes to get the ball to who you want. last year we wanted our FB and TB carrying the ball, so when we ran veer, those two guys were gotten to pretty quick. We got the ball to the FB with just called gives, and found and way to load block the defender assigned to pitch. This may not be triple option in the truest sense of the word, but its still in the spirit of the offense. This year, we wanted our QB to have the ball so we game planned to block the guy assigned to pitch. If nothing else, it forced the defense to assign more than one player to stop one aspect of our option game. This opened up other areas (like play action) even though we were throwing and pitching the ball to a lesser athlete.
I also agree with some of the others. Competiveness, intelligence, and coachability are more valuable than speed and quickness. Even an average athlete can be effective if the defense is not respecting him. You may not get the big plays, but you'll move the chains and keep your offense on the field longer.

Here is a thought. Try experimenting with your TB at QB and run midline, speed, and down option. This would make your more versatile and explosive at QB. Competition is always good for your QB to get better so put someone that is more athletic behind him. I bet he'll get a little quicker.
Coach, you need a kid who is coachable and who will make reads, not predetermine them. Every year I go to a clinic session on the triple, one of the first things the presenter says is "YOU DO NOT NEED A FAST QB TO RUN THE TRIPLE." Georgia Southern has had QB's run a 5.1/40 yd. dash. Just get a kid who listens and does what he's told and you'll be fine.

Just posted on this question under the topic "Old School Bone". Check it out and see if any of it will help you. By far, the prime requisite in my opinion is GOOD DECISION MAKING ABILITY as he reads over all the other sought after abilities of a good triple QB.
Your absolutely right that a good option defending team will quickly decide who is the best runner, second best, third best and simply by aligment can often keep the ball out of your best guys hands!
But, the KEY to me is that you must be totally sold out to the fact that if you decide to run an offense, no mattr what it is, you must be totally sold out to it!!! That way, in time, you will get better at what you do.
Just to put in an occasional option play, etc. is not much help, IMO. On the post listed above for you to check out, I have posted my beliefs on what it takes to run the option.

You need to have a kid there you can think on the run, is cool under pressure and can take and apply coaching. I dont care if the kid runs a 4.5 if he cant read. Gimme the kid who runs a 5.3 If he gets caught from behind on the keeper thats fine, at least he made the right read.
