Here's an unusual situation that I have found myself in.
I coached one year at the varsity level in OK at the 2A level, after which many of you know I was offered a position as an OC in Phoenix at a small school in its 2nd year of football by a coach who shall remain nameless. My hopes were sky high going in; I thought it would be a great opportunity to build a new program from the ground up with a coach who has a father who is the HFC at a MAJOR DI powerhouse.
I ended up being very wrong, and knew within one week of being out here that I needed to get out of the program, FAST. I had the opportunity to go back to OK but ended up turning down a couple of jobs that just didn't feel right for some reason. It didn't take long before I figured out why. My mother passed away from a heart attack 2 months ago this week. I ended up having to take a 2 week leave of absence from work (I'm teaching 7th grade English) because not only did we have to deal with my mom's passing, we also had to move my dad out here with us due to his being in poor health.
My former HC felt betrayed and "disappointed" that I took the other job to begin with, and has been pretty reluctant in helping me out ever since, even though I was loyal to a fault when it came to him and the program. I have to get back into the profession next year, this year has been extremely painful with everything that's happened.
Now to the actual question, how should I go about getting back into coaching next season after being out for a year? How should answer the question of why I didn't coach this year, besides the fact of everything that happened with my family? I'm just looking for some advice from anyone, and in particular anyone who might have found themselves in a similar situation.
Thanks in advance for any and all replies.
