Installing Today’s Hybrid Pistol Offense Run & Pass from Top to Bottom
This manual provides you with the full offensive line, receiver, and quarterback mechanics for installing each offensive play presented. Coach Campbell has left no stone unturned for implementing today’s Pistol Offense into your program.
Coaches. Need some help. After running a zone orientated offense the last 3 years coaching high school I've decided to go to the triple option. I plan on running midling, midline belly, inside veer, outside veer, and some freeze option as my main plays. What I want to know is what backfield alignment do you think is best. I formation, split back, wishbone, double slot. I'm thinking about using a wishbone backfield and checking a lot at the LOS depending on what we see for a front, but I also want to run some double slot stuff. I feel the double slot is hard to defend, gives you more of a passing threat, plus I want to run our rocket and jet sweep stuff. Any help would be appreciated.
first, let me say that the option is difficult to master. however, once mastered, it can be an explosive and sometimes unstoppable offense. my point is that, at first, one type of backfield alignment should be chosen. let the players get good at it before you add another...just my two cents.
we have had a lot of success with the flexbone (double slot) option offense. the flexbone is our choice because
(1) it looks balanced. once a HB (slotback) goes in motion to be the pitchback, it becomes unbalanced. the challenge is for the defense to get another defender to the unbalanced side.
(2) defense should balance. they don't always balance, but you can always audible to run it to the side where you've got numbers.
(3) all options can be run to both sides. this is a big benefit for us. we rely on running midline, ISV and OSV to either side of our formation at any time.
(4) it provides us with a quality play action game. after putting a HB in motion, we can still use 3 on-the-line receivers in our play action game. this forces the defense to use 3 defenders in pass coverage. therefore, they can only use 8 defenders (4 per side) to defend the option.
(5) by running multiple options to either side and using play action, the flexbone allows us to use the whole field.
the flexbone is what works for us (our option philosophy, the type of kids we get, and the 5 benefits listed above).
Coach, I have been a split back veer, and i formation Guy. I have always been a option first with very few power or zone plays. I have had success with both schemes and depended on what type of backs I have to determine whick backfield set I would use. This past year due to a ton of injuries I switched mid season to the flexbone (from the I). This allowed us to use tweener types at the wings.
After running it for 7 weeks (5-2 record) i think it is the best formation for an option first offense. The wing blocking makes it so. The change-ups you can use can eliminate the effectiveness of slant scrape stunts, ect. You can also use the wings to combo with a tackle to run tightend side plays to the open side. (g-belly, outside veer). The counter game is also explosive because of the conditioning of teams seeing motion away.
We used a tightend personnel grouping which causes all sorts of problems for defenses. I do not believe in balancing a defense up. i want them to declare strenght. The unbalances sets you can use in the wing sets can be very difficult to defend. Unless I have a future all-state tb (none on the horizon) I do not see our program getting away from it.
Voslos- run you offense out of a double slot. You can run jet sweep, midline, and inside veer with this formation. I have done this in the past. I would like to discuss this further.

I have to agree with "mg" on balancing the defense. Why is it necessary?? I see many coaches say they run the "flexbone" balanced-double slot formation b/c it forces the defense to balance up. 2 questions on this:1.What advantage does balancing the defense truly present? Just b/c you are aligned in a balanced formation does not mean the defense is going to truly line up balanced to both sides. 2.Do you guys feel the flexbone creates tendancies that the defense can pick up on?? I realize there are misdirection plays that can be ran back against the pitchbacks motion but I would like other opinions on the matter.
thanks for all the input. A couple of things. We play a flex bone team at the start of each season and have been very successful defending it with out 3-5 due to there tendancies of motion. I live Wisconsin where we have UW-River Falls that run the triple as well as anyone I've seen. I played and coached against them for several years. I have a lot of game film on them where they use a lot of 3 back sets. What I really like is when they run midline with QB follow and 2 lead blockers or they run midline belly. I love watching those 2 plays on film. I understand totally what you guys are saying with starting with 1 formation as a base, but if I run flexbone and wishbone the main difference that I would have to teach is my 2 deep backs. I would play those 2 as wings when I went to flexbone. I would also be able to shift out of the wishbone to flexbone without changing personel and have my 2 TEs (which are both athletic enough) out to receivers. please remember that I'm 100 percent totally new to coaching the triple so bear with me guys.
We're actually considering a change from the I formation. Next year, at least part of the time, we will be running with the TB up in an offset position (like Wing-T). We're doing this for a couple of reasons. We run a few basic plays and the bulk of our offense is built around the inside veer, outside veer, and midline. In our basic Slot formation, we would put the TB offset toward the TE. We will use him as the dive back for the outside veer (toward the TE), as the pitch back for the veer toward the open side, and either as a lead blocker for the QB on midline follow or as a pitch back in the other direction. We ran the outside veer this year from the I formation and it worked fine. But, I think that from the offset position, it will hit even faster. The other reason we have is for the misdirection. The I formation is better for the Iso and off-tackle, but since we havn't had a true lead block type FB for several years (we put our best runner at FB) so we won't miss much, and we can still run lead type plays. Hopefully, with the improved counter game, we will not miss not having much of a power game. Why not go split backs? I know split back guys do run midline, but I think its better with the FB behind the center. We can also run one back veer (give or keep) and keep our mesh point consistant whether its two backs or one.

We have used an off set formation in the past and had great success running midline follow out of it. I think the backfield set you choose to run has to depend on what type of plays you want to run in addition to the option game. The main reason I prefer the "I" formation is b/c I love to run the traditional Iso and Off-tackle plays along with the option game. I really love a good mixture of option and power football.

Veer,
What is your base blocking rule up front? We tell our kids as a base rule "In, ON, Linebacker"...meaning, man on inside gap, man on you to linebacker. Our base rule is a "man" blocking scheme but we do use combo's as well.
That game has been Tivo'd... so have about seven other Navy games this season. Actually, I'm watching Air Force play Navy right now. Navy just ran midline out of trips flanker motion. How about that for coincidence, John?

Hey guys:
I've been early to bed and early to rise all week. I saw the Middies run out onto the field with the flag and can't remember another thing (I'm an east coaster). I am not a coach with a bunch of trade stuff(I have a very poor quality/no sound vhs of 05 Army-Navy), so I would gladly send a check for the expense of a vhs/dvd and shipping if someone could burn/record a copy for me. Wife actually saw CSU up 10-7 and I was upset until the DC/Baltimore Fox Sports show showed that little Slotback chewing up the Rams.
Thanks for anything you can do.

Beetle,
I have actually had one heck of a time trying to watch this game as well, thank goodness I taped it! I fell asleep last night as the 2nd quarter came to an end...I wake up early this morning and turn the VCR on to watch the 2nd half...I watch for about 10 minutes and fall asleep again. Needless to say its a darn good thing that I taped this game. Tell ya what I will do, you post your address and I will send you a copy of the game. If you can just send me a blank VHS tape in exchange that would be great.
Dear John:
Thanks alot.
Also, I have enjoyed looking at your site. Loved the Army Flexbone playbook, but it made me see just how complicated the game can be.
My address is:

It will probably be after Xmas before I can grab a new tape and get it in the mail, so only hurry if it is convenient to you.

PS Where is Jackson. I was born in WV and lived in Charleston and Parkersburg. Seems like you are near the River around Point Pleasant or Ravenswood WV.

Greg,
No problem on the blank tape, just send it when you can. Jackson is in Jackson County Ohio which is in the southeast quadrant of the state of Ohio. I live only 35-40 miles west of the Ohio river, Pt.Pleasant is right across the river. We played Point for many years until about 3 years ago when they left our league...they ran the old Double Wing against us the majority of the time.
Anyway I will most definetly get you a copy of the Navy game in the mail but it will be next week sometime. You will surely enjoy it as Navy basically put on a clinic last night. They put up more than 600 total yards last night with 467 of them coming via the rushing game.
Hey Coach Nicholson:
The tape went out this afternoon. Should be your way in a week. Thanks so much for your kindness. I will let you know when yours arrives.

Greg Bailey
