Installing Today’s Hybrid Pistol Offense Run & Pass from Top to Bottom
This manual provides you with the full offensive line, receiver, and quarterback mechanics for installing each offensive play presented. Coach Campbell has left no stone unturned for implementing today’s Pistol Offense into your program.
I have seen a lot of Big on Big protection schemes on this board, but I still haven't learned the concept of it. We generally use slide protection and have a back fill the back side. It is sound, but I want to learn more about pass pro. I want to know the rules concerning Big on Big (who blocks whom) and specifically what happens if the LB bllitzes? Who picks him up? Thanks a lot, Darren
BIG ON BIG may be as SIMPLE as any protection I ever taught. Center blocks Nose or MLB. Guards blocks first man on LOS outside Center. Tackle blocks second man on LOS outside Center. Back blocks first ILB from inside-out.
You can list 9 million "WHAT-IF'S" - but the ABOVE is what it is all about. You can work it out with pad & pencil.
Against an even front I have my center pick up the MLB to OLB to the backside of the QB, working inside out. He sets behind the backside G and reads the backers and then our FB (we are a Wing T Team) picks up the MLB to OLB on the strongside. So MLB blitzes backside the center has got him and if he goes frontside the FB gets him.
Also on the backside, if an outside blitz is shown early then we will make a "fan" call and the protection will slide out. Center takes DT, Guard has DE and Tackle has outside blitz.
In a 1 back set you BOB one side (the other side just blocks solid base man on). In a 2 back set you can BOB both sides, but a good Nose can give your center fits.
All of this is quite simple, & nothing new. This has been one of the most used protections in the game SINCE Sid Gillman introduced it while with the LA Rams 50 years ago!!!!!!!
Vs a 5-2, our C has nose, Gs have DTs, backs have LBs from inside out, and OTs have DEs as stated earlier. Our FB will go opposite the TE. If an LB walks up over the guard, showing blitz early, our guard will make a "one, one" call. Now the guard has the LB, the OT has the DT, and the back has the DE. This has been easily mastered within a couple days of repping it in the past.
Ok, I'm getting a picture of BoB protection. I have a question. If you were facing an even front, 4-4 or 4-3 the Center has the MLB or one of the Middle LB's in 4-4. What if they don't blitz? What is his job then? Just wondering what you do?
what i teach, and what i was taught as a center was, if the no linebacker shows, you help to either side. drop back 1 step then put your head on a swivel looking for anything that shows. same goes for a guard on an odd front, help goes from inside out. hope that helps
don't worry about what you don't know. if you had to know what you dont' know you would've learned it by now
Thanks a lot. I got the idea. If you are uncovered you just have to help your inside teammate and keep your head up for your LB blitzing. Thanks a lot. Darren
We call it out nasty protection (BOB). Gaurds have #1 man on the LOS and Tackles have #2 man on LOS. If a backer walks up, he is now #1 or #2 respectively. Center goes zero to left side pie (point of pie being buddies and then the broadest part of the pie being both LB's to the left side and including CB) The RB goes opposite of center and has the right pie.
If they walk-up three to the left side, the LT makes a left call and everyone from Center over blocks out (center = 1, gaurd = 2, and tackle = 3)
On the right side, if #3 walks up, then RT makes an eagle call and RB has #3.
If they bring 4, hit a route adjustment, hot, QB scrammble, or in the past, we have made a lucky or ringo call where everyone down blocks the direction of the 4 defenders and QB mini rolls while maintaining reads and routes.
Coach.
Terminology is a confusing thing, isn't it, as it varies from camp to camp? BOB pro is to have BIG ON BIG.
An OL is classifeid as BIG if he is COVERED. To be covered by a LB is not to be classified as BIG. If an OL is not BIG, he then assists his teammate to the playside with his block watching for the scraping LB. If his team mate backside is BIG, then he knows he must base! AS ONEBACK posted, it is really very simple and once you get the basics in the kids minds, it becomes automatic. Just teach them WHO TO BLOCK, THEN TEACH THEM HOW. Just a suggestoin as always.

"SOLID" = simply STRAIGHT BASE BLOCKING!!!!! It means to block man on you (DLM OR LB). If no one is ON you (DLM OR LB) block away from the callside ("BOB" side).
If you number defenders (like MANY people do) Center blocks #0; G blocks #1; T blocks #2; & TE blocks #3 (release if he drops). This is elementary protection 101, & is where just about EVERYBODY starts out!!!!!
If this isn't clear, PHONE me at 804-740-4479. I have always felt that you CANNOT learn enough about a concept via email to fully understand it. The site is GREAT for stimulating thought - but you cannot put an entire concept on a site without typing a BOOK!!! I'm NOT going to use something I get off a site WITHOUT talking to someone who does it successfully (thru phone; visit; etc).
