Installing Today’s Hybrid Pistol Offense Run & Pass from Top to Bottom
This manual provides you with the full offensive line, receiver, and quarterback mechanics for installing each offensive play presented. Coach Campbell has left no stone unturned for implementing today’s Pistol Offense into your program.
First of all, people on this board have been a great help to me. Coach Cella's booklets and Coach Wes Elrod's books on blocking the jet sweep (jetsweep.com) have been great.
The problem I've seen lies with running jet sweep from a slot or wing position.
We are a wing-T based team, and have been for 8 years. We never run the jet sweep into the TE because you are asking for a very difficult block -- hooking a man who is often an outside shade. Secondly, you are just asking for a holding penalty because the play takes (still) too long.
We run our jet out of either a doubles set or split trips. Now, only one lineman has to make anything even resembling a block. We do not touch anything inside a 5 tech. The playside tackle throws himself across the end and rolls. Even a great end does not have time to hurdle or shuck a rolling tackle and then tackle the jet. By setting the motion man out in a wide slot he is at FULL speed on handoff. No way a wing or tight slot can be full speed in the 2-3 steps of motion that they get.
On the edge we can crack, man block, cross block, lead with the offset FB. Has been a great series of plays for us with very poor linemen.
I have made a DVD of the series with slow motion replays if you'd like to take a better look.
Certainly don't have all the answers, and there is more than one way to win a ballgame. But, for us, this has been the best thing for poor linemen to do.
I thought this might be about the BUCK series since we have TED NUGENT on our board now!
So this is what you do when not on tour or huntin deer.
Maybe you should apply for the Detroit Lions job.
Sorry, I had to have some fun with the name.
I ran jet to the te/wing with great success. We had the te and wing block down - the tackle and guard both pulled.
The tackle kicked the contain and the guard logged. We called it G O A T = guard onside and tackle pull.
I have compiled this and adjustment for all the basic wing-t plays in my book "Stuff I stle at Clinics"

Coach, you run what I ran years ago as the TAG call, which is, in my opinion, the best way to run the jet. TAG represents the guard and tackle pulling while the tight end blocks down and the backside scoops. This eliminates reach blocking by the 5 technique, which created problems.

Wes Elrod is like a father to me and I have spent countless number of hours discussing and learning this offense from him. What he is doing in this offense is unbelievable and cutting edge. He will never take credit for it but I will give him the credit. I can tell you not running to a TE/WB can cause you a lot problems. Here is why?
1. Not running to a three man surface will allow the defense to use a HOT 2 as an option and now you have a matchup of DE on smaller WB.
2. They can use a hot 2 along with a suicide stunt by the CB with the safety playing over the top.
3. They can have a hot 2 with a jack and jill stunt behind it.
4. They can play 2 safety deep with hot 2 in front of it.
In other words, when you completely take away from running the jet to the TE you are taking away your best answer for hot 2 defensive responses. With a hot 2 defender I can play your jet with three guys and still have 8 for the remainder of the offense.
My wingbacks are in full speed motion like the slots is. If they are not then the QB is to blame. Because he is either snapping it at the wrong snap point or using the wrong footwork. Finally, we do not want him out running his blocks. We run jet to our backs who are aligned in the B gaps and we also run it with Jet loop and Tailspin motions. The speed thing is a myth and a paradigm that needs to be removed from you and your players. There must be enough of compliment plays to keep the defense from selling out. I am very pleased when I see a defense selling out on my motions. We teach our players this means BIG PLAYS ARE COMING!!!
Here is a little secret. You do not need all of those blocking schemes the coaches posted to get to run to the TE. All you have to do is go to a Northern R or Southern L formation. In addition, If the 1 is selling out on the play then you should be gouging them off tackle until he behaves. If you have Coach Elrod's stuff, you have everything you need to make the offense go no matter what the defense does. Just to give you idea on the amount of success we have:
We averaged 251 yds of rushing per game.
We amasses 2400yds rushing or the season. Here is the best part: We did without one 1000yd rusher. No gifted backs.
We had two games where we went over 400yds !! rushing. The problem was we defended everyone else's offense as well. HA HA HA!! If we did not run this offense we would not win a game in our league. We were able to posses a football for a very long time. In some occassions an entire quarter of football. That is one thing I do agree with you is being able to get by with poor linemen. You are right there. If you have questions about handling a suicide stunt or jack and jill. You can email me: KRogerson@hvc.rr.com I will not post that.
Hope this helps,
Karjaw
We dont lose any games we just run out of time.
