Installing Today’s Hybrid Pistol Offense Run & Pass from Top to Bottom
This manual provides you with the full offensive line, receiver, and quarterback mechanics for installing each offensive play presented. Coach Campbell has left no stone unturned for implementing today’s Pistol Offense into your program.
Does anyone use a numbering system when running the option as far as numbering defenders. I know Inside/Outside zone teams use it to count defenders and was wondering if anyone uses it and how you number the defenders, etc. Thanks in advance.
There are a lot of ways to do it. Here is our way.
#1 = 1st DL on/outside the PST. He is the dive key (read key) on ISV.
#2 = Next defender stacked/outside of #1. He is the pitch key on ISV and the dive key on OSV.
#3 = Next defender stacked/outside of #2. He is the 'danger' player. We must block him or we are outnumbered. If we don't have a good angle on him, then we must block #1 or #2.
Forget all that counting jazz, is my advice. If you coach a team of average high school linemen you know that teaching them to count ANYTHING takes them to much time. If they know WHO TO BLOCK by his position in front of them, that is what is really important to me. Who cares what number he is? Just a suggestion as always.

The rule of thumb for the ISV is always read the first man outside the B hole, not the first man outside the playside tackle. The reason for this is a lot of teams who really know how to defend the ISV, will put a 5 tech on the line, BUT WILL WALK UP A LB IN A TIGHT 40i TECH. NOW, AS HE IS THE FIRST MAN OUTSIDE THE B HOLE, HE BECOMES THE READand not the down lineman who is in a 4 or 5 tech. See my point?

I agree. The 40i is the dive key IF he moves up on the LOS. The next defender stacked or outside him is the pitch key. That is why our counting rule is the 1st DL on or outside the PST. "ON" means within the framework of your body. And, we treat anyone on the LOS as a DL...we do not differentiate between 2-point stance players and 3-point stance players. We found that it is simpler for our kids.
Also, I agree with not making the OL count. We give them blocking rules. Only our QB and HB's (slotbacks) learn how to count.
