guys need a little help here. i am at a small 2A school and serve as both offensive line coach and defensive coordinator. just curiuos to your opinion of playing guys both ways and running a zone blocking scheme. some have told me it can't be done because of the time involved and the lack of coaches (we have 4 total including the head coach). we have the personnel to run the offense, and may have the numbers on the line...but i may have to start 2 freshmen offensive linemen to do it. just need some insight and opinions. any help is appreciated.
I never really have time for people who say "it can't be done". To me, there is no better statement going that personifies a defeatist attitude. Just my opinion. YOU CAN DO ANYTHING THAT YOU PUT YOUR MIND TO AND STAY DEDICATED TOO! You know that old adage about "neccessity is the mother of invention"?
If your numbers dictate that you must play kids both ways, and at the smaller schools that's usually a given, I would do this: Break your daily practices into O and D line segments of equal time. Teach the offenseive linemen what they need to know and the defensive linemen likewise. If you are fortunate enough to come up with another coach or two, WHO KNOW WHAT THEY ARE DOING, then you will be ahead of the game. If not, schedule yourself to handle one line or the other and your present line coach to do the same. ZONE BLOCKING IS SOME OF THE EASIEST FUNDAMENTALS TO TEACH, NO MATTER WHAT THESE GUYS TRY TO TELL YOU ABOUT IT BEING SO TIME CONSUMING, ETC. TEACH THEM WHO TO BLOCK AND THEN TEACH THEM HOW. IF THEY UNDERSTAND A BASIC PRINCIPLE OF JUST ASKING THEMSELVES IF I WERE BASE BLOCKING, WHO WOULD I BLOCK? THEN, SIMPLY PUT IN A FEW OTHER BASIC CONCEPTS OF ZONE BLOCKING AND THEN REP THE DICKENS OUT OF IT. IT IS REALLY VERY SIMPLE, NOT COMPLICATED WHATSOEVER!!! Call me at 864-958-9545 and I can walk you through the basics in less than 10 minutes. I will be more than happy to help you in any way I can.

Coach my thoughts exactly...when people say it can't be done, it just motivates me to work harder to make sure it gets done. Here are my options as i see it 1. talk head coach into trying to hire a 2nd line coach or 2. i take offensive linemen and work them 2 periods a day( during their regular offensive indy period, and during what would be their defensive period) and have someone else coach the defensive line w/ me just calling defensives and not coaching a defensive position. i know we have the personnel to get it done and i have a pretty good idea of the basic rules. Here's what I'm teaching:
· The first thing you must do is determined if you are covered or uncovered.
· You are covered if there is any defensive player lined up on you on the line of scrimmage. (inside shoulder, head up, outside shoulder)
· If you are covered, you will:
o Look inside and determine if your backside teammate is uncovered.
o If he is uncovered, you will combo the man covering you to linebacker. You are responsible for the outside half or playside number of that defender.
o If your backside teammate is covered you will base block the defender of you with no help from inside.
· If you are uncovered, you will:
o Combo with teammate to playside. Blocking 1st level to linebacker.
o You are responsible for inside half of the down lineman
o Take a zone step watching his near knee:
§ If it comes toward you you will take the block over with little or no help from teammate.
§ If near knee goes away from you, you will combo with teammate and climb to plugging linebacker.
Key points of emphasis:
1. move first level first
2. don't leave a combo to chase and linebacker
3. block with 2 hands and 4 eyes, watching linebacker. if linebacker fast flows away and you're the uncovered man use two hands and overtake defensive linemen NOW.
Coach what i need some help with is line splits and footwork...any drill tape you suggest? Right now i have them taking a short lateral step, with second step in the ground fast at the crotch of the defender, punching with near hand.
