I am looking into buying chutes for board drills. How many of you have them? Where did you get them? I am looking at Rogers. They have 2 types. One of them is called a speed chute which has a higher area for the head to fit through and then be able to move without hitting the crossbar. Was wondering if anyone out there has them and likes/dislikes them. Thanks!
Coach, I love using the chutes, I use them everyday. I have not used the speed chute, however, I really like the idea of players hitting with their head up. This will allow them to see LB's much easier and it also allows for easier individual reps of Pass Pro footwork inside a chute. I will say that I am a huge fan of the trap chute as I can use it for the same drills as I would the Oklahoma chute but can also rep traps and boots, waggles, etc... under it.
You should see about going to a local welder/metal shop - they may be able to make you one out of scraps or very cheaply (for some advertising they may even do it free). I have even seen someone make one from PVC (although it gets very light).
I've got a personal friend of mine working on one this winter/spring - he runs a metal fabricating business. All I had to do was draw him up a few diagrams with measurements.
They also made up some weighted running sleds for me from their scraps.
We have the speed chutes from Rogers and they are the best thing we ever bought for our lineman. Old traditional chutes may cause the lineman to lower their head to fire through the chute. Speed chutes teach proper head placement and leading with the face into the chest. No head lowering to get through the chute. They also climb in angle so that players can hit properly and climb/ or roll their hips and force the defensive player upwards. Best tool we have and well worth the cost. Save money on the boards and make your own.
