lookinf to add the rocker sweep next year but have heard diffeent ways to block it. Is it true that you can run the rocket sweep out of 4 wide and not block the 5 tech? The way I understand it is that you can send the playside tackle to the inside LB, Pull the playside gaurd, and have the center and backside lineman to linebackers. Is this right?
The way I prefer is to "pull" the playside tackle around the defensive end and seal the edge while allowing the guard to climb to the LB or safety. Don't bother blocking anyone inside the playside 5 technique unless the nose is a quick and aggressive attacker who may hit the qb during the pitch.
jetsweep.com has a great video collect, one of which contains Rocket G (what you described) out of 5 wide. You must register in order to access the video clips.
Because the Rocket sweep is a wide quick pitch, it's probably easier to pull the Tackle and get him in front as opposed to the guard. If you're guard is getting in front of the back on the back, then you're probably pitching it wide enough.
We have the T release around the 5 technique and we pull the guard. Usually out of 4 wide, we crack the OLB with the #2 receiver and the guard pulls outside the crack block and seals the safety running the alley. If the T can release around the 5 tech and seal the inside LB, it works even better. OUr back catches the pitch behind the T, so the 5 tech has to be a quick stud to make the play.
