What are the pros and cons for having a leadership "team" within a team? Would this contradict the concept of being a TEAM? I have been thinking heavily on the idea of implementing a leadership council for my team this season. Do any of you guys think that this would motivate the whole group if the leaders were easily identified? Would it breed envy? I was thinking of making this a big deal, perhaps giving them all different color jereys so they would stand out and you could easily notice if they were slacking. What do you think coaches, good idea or bad idea?
"Building a legacy through the foundation of family."
Would the council consist of people in each grade? I have heard of people doing that before, and being very successful with it. If the council is all varsity players for instance, what would the difference be between the council and a group of captains?
I dont think this would undermine the team concept. On the contrary you would be cultivating leaders and leadership. What that would do also is make the other players on the team accountable to not only themselves, you, their parents and the program but it would increase their accountability towards other individuals on the team. I am all for players being held accountable.
I was watching some military documentary a while back and what they said is that the way they get soliders to kill others is to make them feel that they are accountable for their fellow soldier. The idea then would be that you arent killing your enemy but you are preventing your enemy from killing your "brother".
However, I would not advocate giving them different colored jerseys.
It would be a good Idea to break it down by grade. I would think that the captains of the team would also be apart of the council. Thanks for your insight on accountability. I also share that same belief because kids will give you every excuse available!
I would like to ask, what struck a nerve about the different color jerseys? Im just curious as to what kind of message it would send in your opinion.
"Building a legacy through the foundation of family."
I am not sure how you do it now or how you "sort" the teams when you run your scheme period but one thing that we have done at different schools I have been at is that the offense will have one color jerseys and the defense will have another. If you use pennies or skull caps then it doesnt really matter.
In my opinion if there is a leadership council the players will already know who is on it. I dont feel it would be necessary to give a few kids different jerseys. I just think that they would already be singled out, there wouldnt be a reason to do it again with jerseys.
