Take all the OL out for an all you can eat pizza buffett. They have CiCis pizza around here and its like 6 bucks each. Have a contest see who can eat the most, but dont start counting till they have eaten a whole pizza. Its fun.
Living in Florida, the beach is never more than a few blocks away. I used to take the whole team to the beach in the off season and play a game of touch for about an hour. (Running in the sand is excellent conditioning for both cardiovascular and leg developement). Then, I would life guard for them to have a 30 minute swim, devising races, etc. They loved it and all the while I was working on their conditioning and they didn't have a clue. No better exercise going than HYDOTHERAPY. All they knew was they were having a ball and looked forward to the days of the week we had designated as Beach Day.

“Now this is the law of the jungle,
as old and as true as the sky.
And the wolf that keeps it shall prosper,
but the wolf that breaks it must die.
As the vine that girdles the tree trunk,
the law runneth forward and back.
The strength of the pack is the wolf,
and the strength of the wolf is the pack!”
“THE LAW OF ATHLETICS”
“And this is the law of athletics,
as true as the flight of the ball.
And the player that keeps it will win,
but the player that breaks it must fall.
As the ball and the parts it is made of,
are bound and held fast by the seam,
the strength of the team is the player,
and the strength of the player the team!”
Great thoughts. When it comes to offseason competitons among the linemen, do you guys like individual competitions, breaking them into groups, or both? do you switch up the groups or keep the same groups all offseason? What about things other than physical competions - anybody do community service? Relationship education? Any problems with these?
The way we respond to adversity is a direct expression of our character.
Rudyard Kipling has long been my favorite poet! When I was coaching I always had over my desk "IF" where all could see it! The line that states: "and if you can fill the unforgiving minute with sixty seconds worth of distance run, the world is yours and everything that is in it and whats more, you will be a man my son" never fails to give me a rush unto this very day!!! To me, to instill in another human being that kind of emotion is what I allude to as REAL GREATNESS! My mother gave me the original copy when I was 8 years old! I still have it in my archives in storage.

I've used the Pizza idea or Buffet idea and it works! Another thing I will try this season is to keep all the O-line together in the locker room and put the leader (not necessarily a starter) right in the center of them. Another thing I do is to have story time when we're done with Individual before we go to Team, as long as they've hustled and gotten their work done. We'll all take a knee, and 1 day, I'll tell a story then we'll go to Team. They'll have to write it down that night and figure out the meaning that night. Then the next 2 days, we'll talk about how it applies to their lives and the team. Then we'll start with a new story, always something that has a point (teambuilding, communication, etc).
I've thought about making the starting 5 run sprints all running holding on to a rope together. Any thoughts?
I have done the pizza thing another. thing i have done is the oline always sits together in the back of the bus they eat together at pregame meals they we make all our linemen lift at 6 am in the offseason and on days we lift. We do have our annual strongman competition too which is good. We also make them compete with each other in our mat drills. some more things usually get the oline t-shirts or when we run hills i have had them try and carry each other up the hill. I don't know just get them to think they are a family and there quarterback and running backs are what they protect
