I have been hearing about a play called the belly sweep that I am not familiar with. It sounds similar to the down except the QB rides the FB and then hands off to the HB. Does anyone run this play and if so, what are the advantages and disadvantages of having it within the package?
The belly sweep (or down sweep) was our answer to run the bucksweep out of the belly series. It gives the same action as down except the trailing hb doesn't run the option, he gets the ball and aims for the off-end hole (just like bucksweep). I like it because usually the ILB's who read guards aim for the off-tackle hole and takes himself out of the play, since it's one whole wider. Because not many teams ran it in our area, it was something new and opened things up for us.
