Coaches,
Although I have posted a ton of information on this topic in the 2 years I have been on the forum, I have been beseiged of late with requests on my personal email for a complete run down on the point method verses the universally accepted ride and decide technique. I would like to take this opportunity to post one more time, in it's entirety, my way of running the point and the reason for doing so. This way, I can meet the requests of all concerned at the same time.
As an ex-QB who played under the ride and decide, I was elated some 18 years ago now to be made cognizant of the point method. I just finished an on field 42 year coaching career at the end of last sesaon due to health problems, but for the last 18 of those years I employed and coached only the point method.
It always was UNCOMFORTABLE for me to keep my head on my read man and at the same time reach back with both arms across my body in the OPPOSITE DIRECTION from my head to the Dive back for the mesh. # 1- THE POINT METHOD COMPLETELY ELIMINATES THIS UNCOMFORTABLE AND UNNATURAL BODY POSITION.
#2- it will greatly REDUCE, if not almost ENTIRELY ELIMINATE, FUMBLES CAUSED BY THE MESH ON THE RIDE AND DECIDE. See testamonials from other coaches on this fact listed on this forum!
FOLLOWING IS MY WAY OF COACHING AND RUNNING THE POINT TECHNIQUE:
Example: This will be explained as an ISV to the rip side verses a 50 front.
The QB, upon making his escape step at 6 o clock and gathering his left foot to his back foot in a practiced rhythm will IMMEDIATELY STEP DOWN HILL TOWARD HIS READ MAN BY FOLLOWING THE ABSOLUTE NECCESSITY OF THE OL LINE SURGE! HE WILL NEVR EVER COME DOWN THE LOS PARALLEL! When stepping parallel and penetration takes place that will bubble the QB's path, he is forced away from his read and that is when the read is able to give that dreaded "fuzzy read" that makes the QB make bad decisions. This is why the midline is the easiest opotion to teach A qb to read( because of the close proximity of the usual 3 tech that is read).
Upon making his initial downhill step, the QB will extend his arms with two pressure points on the ball (BOTH HANDS) directly at his read! Instead of having his head in one direction and his arms in the opposite direction, HIS WHOLE BODY IS DRIVING AT THE READ IN THE SAME DIRECTION!
Now comes the beauty of the technique! As the dive back explodes on his path, which on the ISV is the brownspot of the guard to outside leg, the QB has already stepped to the hole (B gap in this example) and made his read. If it is to be a give, I actually encourage the QB to be right up in the hole, not just at the lip
to encourage the Dive back to keep driving downfield! As the Dive back approaches the outstretched football, he simply has to do one of two things. If the ball is still there as he arrives, HE KNOWS IT IS HIS FOOTBALL FROM THAT INSTANT ON AND HE MEERELY CLOSES DOWN ON THE BALL WITH THE BALL IN HIS CRADLE AND RUNS HIS PATH TO DAYLIGHT!!! If the ball is pulled at the last instant before the mesh by the QB, HE KNOWS IT IS NOT HIS BALL AND HE CONTINUES ON HS PATH AND BLOCKS!!! I COACH THE DIVE BACKS FROM THE GET GO TO NEVER REACH FOR THE BALL, BUT TO SIMPLY CLOSE DOWN ON IT WITH YOUR CRADEL AND PLANT THE BALL SAFELY IN THAT BASKET!!! REACHING FOR THE BALL IS JUST NOT TOLERATED AS IT WILL DESTROY THE PLAY!!! IF THE QB PULLS THE BALL, HE THEN CONTINUES HIS DOWNHILL STEPS TO HIS SECOND READ, ETC.
That, in a nutshell, is all there is to it!!! It is not rocket science, it is just good sound football.
When I first heard of the technique in 1988, all I could visulize was mass fumbles. IN TRUTH, THE EXACT OPPOSITE TOOK PLACE AND WE REDUCED OUR FUMBLES THE INITIAL YEAR OF USING THE POINT TO ZERO!!! All the things that cause fumbles, flying elbows, reaching for the ball, etc. are completely ELIMINATED BY UTILIZING THE POINT. You, as the coach, must insure sound installation of the technique and then just stand back and let the guys rep it until they turn blue this summer!!! I KNOW, FOR A FACT, THAT IF YOU TEACH AS OUTLINED ABOVE YOU WILL BE WELL PLEASED WITH THE RESULTS! Count on it.
NOW, IN THE SAME SCENARIO AS THE EXAMPLE ABOVE, LETS SAY WE ARE GOING TO RUN THE OSV:
NOW, THE qb WILL HAVE TO MAKE THAT EXTRA STEP TO REACH THE HOLE BEFORE THE DIVE BACK ARRIVES. SO HERE, WE NOW HAVE THE qB TAKE HIS DEEP ESCAPE STEP, GATHER ON RHYTHM
AND KNOWING HE HAS TO MAKE AN EXTRA STEP TO GET TO THE C GAP, I SIMPLY HAVE HIM HOLD HIS ARMS IN CLOSE WITH ELBOWS BENT AND THE BALL BEING HELD IN BOTH HANDS ABOUT 6INCHES IN FRONT OF HIS CHEST, AND EMPLOYING A SIMPLE, NOT OVER EXAGERATED ROCKING MOTION OF HIS ARMS, DRIVE HARD AT THE EMOL AND JUST AS HE ARRIVES FULLY EXTEND THE POINT DIRECTLY AT HIS READ. THE PROCEDURE FROM BOTH HIM AND THE DIVE BACK THEN BECOME IDENTICAL TO HIS MOVEMENTS ON THE ISV. I DO NOT TEACH POINTING AT THE READ THE WHOLE TIME IN THE OSV AS THAT DETRACTS FROM THE QB'S SPEED IN GETTING TO THE HOLE.
IF ANYONE WANTS TO DISCUSS THIS FURTHER, PLEASE CONTACT ME AT 86-4958-5945 ANYTIME. I SINCERELY HOPE THIS AIDS THOSE OF YOU WHO HAVE BEEN MAKING THE INQURIES, AND AS ALWAYS AM VERY GLAD TO HAVE BEEN OF HELP. PLEASE POST ANY COMENTS YOU MAY HAVE.
