What would you add? Please read and critique
Please understand the position is already approved by our board... this is meant to break down any resistance our school union will have at negotiations for the salary supplement.
To Whom it May Concern:
In concerning the debate over the need of a sizable salary supplement for our strength and conditioning coach, safety and education of our students in their endeavors is the utmost priority. An educator that can create a strength program that reaches outside of the structure of physical education classes and support our athletes in their Varsity athletics, would be one of the greatest assets to the Carroll High School climate. However, the best aspect of this position is bringing a universal concept to physically preparing our students through safe teaching of weight training and proper nutrition.
Obviously, our students will benefit from learning correct and safe lifting techniques. One facet of strength and conditioning is an education on nutrition. In the age of diet pills, protein shakes, and steroids, our students will learn healthy habits that will carry them through life. The strength and conditioning coach will carry immeasurable influence on the lives of our students.
In the age of specialization in sports, a training specialist can avoid common pitfalls. It is our responsibility as educators and professionals to ensure that our students are properly prepared for every undertaking. As our culture encourages prioritization of sport activities, a growing trend across the nation is a rash of what are called “overuse” or “overtraining” injuries. These injuries occur because these student-athletes lack proper supervision and expert training to avoid such avoidable problems and are constantly using only a small set of movements. Our Strength and Conditioning coach will monitor every student athlete throughout the ENTIRE year to ensure that our students and athletes are safely preparing themselves for achievement of their goals. By providing alternative techniques to train, our students will be safely prepared and be much safer while competing.
A Strength and Conditioning coach will also protect our students that attempt to participate in many activities by providing access to training while being “in-season” most of the year. In years passed, athletes lacked proper preparation for competition. Therefore, they ran a higher risk of injury.
A former student, name withheld for privacy, tore multiple ligaments in his knee making a simple turn on an athletic field. He did participate in multiple sports and did not achieve any significant strength gains from his freshman year through his senior year. His sport coaches lost track of his progress as he bounced from one season to the next season and the next coach. A strength coach would have tracked his training over his years at Carroll. The injury was NOT a fluke, but because the system in place did not support him in his striving to achieve his goals. His resulting injuries kept him from participating in one of his sports, and cost him an opportunity to earn a scholarship to play in this respective sport in college (which is true as his recruiting prospects dried up). It should be mentioned that this athlete missed considerable amounts of school in surgeries and rehabilitation visits. While rehabilitating, this student’s grades had dipped so low due to the amount of time and energy he had to devote to getting healthy. I personally had to start tutoring him.
The person who provides these services for our students is just as important as any sponsor or coach within our school system. They will put in an infinite amount more of time and energy than rest of our faculty in helping our students achieve desired goals; therefore, adding a much need positive boost to the climate of our school. This will show that our school is willing to provide access to achievement of their goals. This person will be one of the most influential people in the lives of hundreds and hundreds of our students. We must create this position. We must hire someone with incredible credentials and to do so will require adequate compensation for their expertise and time. Our kids deserve it.
