Installing Today’s Hybrid Pistol Offense Run & Pass from Top to Bottom
This manual provides you with the full offensive line, receiver, and quarterback mechanics for installing each offensive play presented. Coach Campbell has left no stone unturned for implementing today’s Pistol Offense into your program.
We have at the 11-13 year olds have had a one hand snap and have turned the ball. QB sits in with hands top and bottom. I noticed while watching the NFL Youth DVD that they snap with the QB hands left to right and bring the ball straight back. Any thoughts or Advice.
CENTER: As you drive the ball to the top hand, give it a slight - 1/4 wrist twist so it fits into the QB's hands. The ball must be parallel to the ground at contact with the QB's top hand.
This is how we teach it:
The ball is a quarter turned and the grip is a natural v formed between the thumb and the index finger. The center will snap the ball with a stiff wrist and a lifting motion. The ball will turn a quarter placing the ball with the laces in the QB hands which will allow him to grip the ball with the laces in the proper position for throwing a pass.
Many ways to do it. Being an Ex-QB I was always taught that the QB's top hand should be placed wrist deep under the centers crotch, AND HE SHOULD BE ABLE TO CONTROL THE SNAP WITH THIS HAND. The opposite hand is at an angle slightly so that it serves as a guide to the football which is being drawn back to the Qb's third hand (lower abdomen) and the thumbs, though not necessarily interlocked, but close enough to prevent a hard sanp going through the QB's hands. THE BALL IS TURNED AND SLAMMED INTO THE QB'S HAND THAT WHEN IT IS PERFORMED CORRECTLY, YOU SHOULD HEAR A RESOUNDING "SMACK" OF THE FOOTBALL. A QB WHO PUTS HIS HAND UP UNDER THE CENTERS REAR END IN A RELAXED FASHION IS ASKING FOR A BROKEN FINGER. THE TOP HAND MUST HAVE ENOUGH RIGIDITY(WITHOUT BEING LIKE CEMENT) TO CONTROL THE BALL. The center's job is to get the ball in the QB's hands IN THE POSITION THAT THE QB LIKES TO RECEIVE IT BEST, IN THE MOST EXPEDIENT WAY POSSIBLE! Yes, there are some QB's who do not want the laces on the snap as they do not use them. Not my way, but that is not the point here. The QB learning to step with the Center as he delivers the ball while stepping to his block, is imperative. The summer just ahead is a great time for the two of them, as well as, the 2nd team center to take snaps as much as they can. It pays big dividends!
