Coach, sorry to take so long getting back to you. This will be a "blast from the past" as they say:
In the Gatorbowl, vs. R.E. Lee I don't know the year, but it's the mid-80's
LT 78 James Hoskins
LG 70 Andrew Smith
C 53 Anthony Rogers
RG 60 Darryl Morton
RT 73 Jason Cruz
TE 91 Clarance Roulhac
SE 10 Keith Laidler
SE 83 Dezzy Patterson
QB 3 Adrian Mincey
FB 2 Ralph Dawkins
WB 4 Jammie Mack
WB 7 Dominique Ross
I don't know if you were coaching in Jax. in those days or not, but I've used this broadcast for years for Offensive ideas, both for Corky's wing-t and Raines' Wishbone.
Thanks for the help the other day on the option question. My FB is a good kid, and my QB can throw well, I know oneback stuff well, but was just wondering if there was anything new out there.
Thanks for all your help over the last couple of years. We start practice at my little school the first of August. I've coached public school for many years with this being my first private school team. It is a world of difference, some good some bad. thanks again, David
Those were my guys, sure enough! I was upstairs for that game as the QB/OC if it is the game I am recalling. What private school do you work for now? I was going to work at a private school in St. Augustine one time but they just didn't pay enough at that time for the responsibility of being a head coach.
a great deal of work for very little money and I just couldn't do it then. It is probably lots of fun now that your older, right?

Coach, I'm glad you told me you were upstairs for that game, I looked on the sidelines for "a younger version" but so far had no luck, now I now why.
I was at Paxon at that time, coming over with Seth MacCollough from Jackson High. My first high school coaching experience came at Jackson, the coaches would always talk about how Raines had the best kids. They were polite, well disciplined, and fantastic looking atheletes. We would drool over the kids ya'll had there. I know that it sounds like an impossible oxymoran but mannerly, disciplined inner-city urban kids who wore neckties on gameday. Now Rebault that was another story.
My best game story was when my JV team tied Raines in 1982-that's it, otherwise I got run over
Currently, I coach in Brooksville at a little school where my wife teaches-Hernando Christian Academy. I don't think there is a smaller classification that us, if there is a class for sub 1B-we're it. 105 kids in the entire 9-12. A friend and I were asked to start this program and this will be my 3rd year. I have a wonderful QB and a really fine FB and nothing else. I know that both these kids can play on another level, probably not D-1. My QB has been #1 in the county for our first two years, my FB/LB has been #1 in tackles for the last two years. Coach these are the only two athletes I have. It's taking some getting used to private school athletics, however I'm closer to these kids than I've ever been at all my public school positions.
Thanks for all your help, David
Sincere thanks for that report. Yes, we truly had great athletes at Raines, no doubt about it. There are kids who are STARS in the NFL today from those teams we had then, not just roster names. Ralph Dawkins(on the lineup card you sent me) had a good career with the Saints, and Dominique Ross has two Super Bowl rings with the cowboys. Ralph's younger brother, BRIAN DAWKINS of the eagles, is often alluded to as the best Safety in the NFL. His mate, Lito Sheperd and a great receiver we had by the name of JABBAR GAFFNEY ARE ALL TOGETHER ON THE EAGLES FOR THIS SEASON. Brian and Lito have been fixtures in the secondary for them for a number of years now, and Jabbar just came over from the Texans. We also had Derek Alexander who played at FSU and then had a stellar NFL career with the Vikings in the NFL. Of course, at Raines we were the Vikings also which I found to be ironic. In other years I had Rod Gardner who was my QB/Rec at Raines and then went to Clemson and became a first round pick of the Redskins. He is now with the Packers. But, you know coach, we had others who were just as talented and could have played in the NFL with no problem. But, for whatever reason, they just didn't apply themselves like the guys mentioned above who did! Keith Laidler was as good a receiver as you ever want to see (he too is on that lineup card you sent me for that game against Lee). He played for my championship 1994 AFL Super Bowl team on the pro minor leage level, made the Pro Bowl team and then just gave it up. The first man I ever put in the NFL from that team was a man I had at Raines first as a high schooler. His name is Leonard Larramore and when he was with me he was benching 655! We got him signed to the Buffalo Bills by Head Bills Scout Bob Windisch immediately after he put on a clinic at nose tackle in the pro bowl game that year and I was selected to be the HC for that game as well. He is now retired from football and travels with the Baptist Power team putting on lifting exhibitions and witnessing for Christ. He benches over 700 lbs! The very best player of them all in my book, got a full ride to Ole Miss from Raines and then transferred to Howard Univ. because he wanted to party instead of practice!!! Never heard from him again. But, after coaching 30 years or so at the HS level, coaching at Raines was the greatest talent pool I ever worked with.

Coach, thanks for all the memories I remember every name there. Funny though, most of what I remember was getting flat run over by that Raines bunch. However, it wasn't as bad as it sounds because the Raines kids were such fine citizens. I know it sounds strange to others reading this, but these inner-city kids were the finest kids you ever met. Huge, fast, discipled, well coached, good sportmanship and well mannered-letal combination for anybody trying to beat 'em.
Coach, you did a fine job.
Thanks for sharing, hope you're feeling fine. David
Nothing like a trip down memory lane for an old coach like me! Enjoyed it and thanks for the kind words.
Feeling quite well, it will just take time to get my full strength back I guess. Thanks for asking.
