Installing Today’s Hybrid Pistol Offense Run & Pass from Top to Bottom
This manual provides you with the full offensive line, receiver, and quarterback mechanics for installing each offensive play presented. Coach Campbell has left no stone unturned for implementing today’s Pistol Offense into your program.
This will be our first year running the spread offense. We're looking for a user friendly system of calling offensive plays; runs and passes. Your input would be greatly appreciated.
If i dont call anything - then we are in the gun. If i call "home", we are under center.
All formations are mainly colors:
black = double slot
grey = doubles or double wide slot
white = doubles invert
red = trips right
blue = trips left
*we also do some bunch and tight bunch that i call snug.
inside trap out of the gun is called 31/32
inside zone out of the gun is called 54 / 55.
outside zone is called 56 / 57.
play action is "500" series. for example, playaction off of inside zone is 554 / 555. the receivers simply just have to know what routes to run.
if i want option, it is "100" series. the QB option off of the zone play is 154.
70 / 71 means that we are three stepping or catch and throw out of the gun. 70 = right, 71 equals left.
We are primarily in doubles and our routes are mostly mirrored. all quicks like hitch, fades, slants, bubbles, etc. if i call 70 hitch, 90% of the time, we are throwing the hitch and thats final. we do not let our QB make a ton of decisions except for the 80 series below.
80 / 81 means that we are 5 stepping or 3 step out of the gun. 80 = right, 81 means left. These routes have one read for our QB to make.
Rip / Liz motion = flat or long motion
Ram / Lion motion = deep or orbit motion
single back is called our FB in our offense. King = offset right, Queen = offset left. For the most part, he knows where to align so i do not call his alignment.
Having run a 3 x 2 for 20 years now, long before it ever became popular, I always stuck with a basic KISS method of keeping it simple and used it successfully on both the high school and professional minor league levels.
In our conventional passing formations with QB up under center, X is the split, Y is the TE, Z is the Flanker.
In our 3 x 2 ( I flip flop the X and Y because I want my best receiver on the trips side) we affix Alpha designations to each receiver as follows: From right to left it will be X on the LOS, A off 1 yd and 5 wide from the X, B 1 yd off and 5 wide from the A, C is the backside slot, Y is on the LOS. So, we simply have X_A_B_C_Y.
All routes that make up our patterns are predicated on our 50 series (2 WR's running mirrors and the QB taking a 3-5 step drop.) All receivers are required to learn the routes and patterns from all 5 spots. Typical play call = 10 rip- all up- X 52 quick 10 is our 3 x 2 formation rip sets the trip side, all up indicates all receivers run their predesignated routes for that play, X 52 quick tags the X receiver as the primary who will run a 52 (quick slant) after a 1 count delay. Simple, concise, very effective for us over the years. It is not rocket science, it is football.
Coach Easton
J.C. EASTON<BR>HEAD COACH<BR>GA TIGERS FOOTBALL<BR>PROFESSIONAL MINOR LEAGUE
we use a number/tag system for our plays.
4=inside zone
4 triple=inside zone with QB option
80's 5 step
90's 3 step
We put all of our plays on a wristband. Every offensive player wears one and we never huddle. We have 70 spots on the wristband playcard. We doubled up our most common plays. We signal in a # and the kids look down on the wrist for the play.We hand signal in formation and motions.
Later in the year we changed the playcards at halftime just to make sure our plays weren't getting picked off.
Play caller had a playsheet with the play and the corresponding wristband number next to it.
We also didn't flip our receivers in a base formation.
BASIC SPREAD FORMATION
X- split left
T- off the line in left slot.
Y- open in right slot
Z- flanked right
in base spread the FB was to right of the QB in shotgun
Spread West told FB to align left of the QB
TRIPS/ TRIPS WEST
X split left
Z #2
TB#3
Y- Open right
TREY/ Trey West
X split left
Y #3 right
T #2 right
Z flanked right
EMPTY/ EMPTY WEST
same as spread with FB either right or left
It is really simple and works really well for us.
We also run some I-Pro. We will send in a different TE when we run our I package.
