alignment and basic defense

A 1 technique is a shade on the center some call a 1 technique an inside shade on the guard. A 2 technique is a head up defender on the guard. All even numbers are head up and odd numbers are shades. Coach CAmpbell

P.S. I don't think there is a universal system for DL techniques (at least Coach Hartman's differs form ours) but it really only indicates alignment anyway depite the term "technique."

There was a universal system that was always accepted and utilized by coaches everywhere as far as numbering defensive techniques is concerned, until someone started changing things and screwed it all up in my opinion. The system we all used for a lot of years was as follows:

0 tech= head up on Center
1=inside shoulder of guard (now called 2i by most)
2=head up on guard
3=outside shoulder of guard
4i=inside shoulder of tackle
4=head up on tackle
5=outside shoulder of tackle
7=inside shoulde of TE
6=head up on TE
9=outside shoulder of TE

The changes started when someone didn't like the change from 5 to 7-6-9 as it is out of sequence.
They thought it should be 6-7-8 and started using that. If you go to a clinic today and hear an older coach speak, you will hear him say the numbers listed above. A younger coach is libel to use the other.

We have always used the term GHOSTED for a wider than normal 5 or 9 technique. Example: if the backside 5 is wider than normal he would be called a GHOSTED 5, SAME ON THE FRONTSIDE 9 ALIGNED WIDER THAN NORMAL ON THE OUTSIDE SHOULDER OF THE TE.

Who is to say one way is better than the other, certainly not me. TERMINOLOGY changes from camp to camp, so learn to go with the flow wherever you find yourself. When you become a head coach, do it the way you like best.
