Installing Today’s Hybrid Pistol Offense Run & Pass from Top to Bottom
This manual provides you with the full offensive line, receiver, and quarterback mechanics for installing each offensive play presented. Coach Campbell has left no stone unturned for implementing today’s Pistol Offense into your program.
Our youth football league is growing and we have rules set in place so that if we reach 32 children per team, we need to sign more kids up and split a team. The situation is this, we are sitting at 30 kids per team with a registration to go. The decision to split into another team is becoming a heated discussion amongst the board members that our 5 teams in our town need to remain competitive against the smaller towns we play. My point and feelings are this, it is great to be competitive but the purpose of our youth league is to give as many children that want to play the game the best opportunity to play and learn the game. If we split into a 6th team, we will have 25 players per team, and it will give those 25 children the best opportunities to learn and play. We also have a 8 play minimum play rule so that also becomes jeopardized if you have too many kids on one team.
I would love to hear some thoughts outside of the league, what do some of you gentleman think we should do? Remain competitive with the smaller towns or expand to teach more kids the game?

1) If anyone is seriously considering turning away kids from youth football who want to play in order to gain a competitive advantage, that person is patently unfit to be involved.
2) Your coaches and your players will have far more fun with 25 on a team instead of 30+. When you scrimmage at practice, what are you going to do with 10 extra kids? Nevermind getting all the kids in the game and dealing with unhappy parents.
3) The league I played in as a kid had 8 teams of 16-20 that played against each other AND one travel team that played against other towns. It is probably too late for you to do that this year but it is something to consider.
I would be curious to know how you assign players to each team, especially when you add one right before the season.
You have hit upon the head of the problem with youth football, as I see it. Youth coaches, for the most part now, certainly not all, are parents who wish to help their kids get started in football and are really not qualified to teach the fundamentals of the game. Some are guys who are living their careers vicariously through their sons and care about winning more than anything else. With all the other things in todays world that vie for young peoples attention, it is my opinion that the game at the youth level must be fun and interesting and that the coaches must fully understand a policy of positive reinforcement with their kids. Does that mean they don't want to win, of course not! Why play the game if you don't care who wins??? However, these adults who get caught up in the competition with other cities and so on and lose sight of their real mission, are making a big mistake in my opinion.

We do a player draft with 2 weekends for a player evaluation combine. The 2 weekends are to help accomodate someone who may have missed one or the other. We keep it pretty simple have the boys run a 20, 40 yard dash, a shuttle run, then allow each player to throw and catch in front of the coaches present. We did try utilizing the kids hitting a tackling dummy but I felt like that was not very effective and many coaches felt it was a waste of time. The short training session they gave was ok and we wanted to experiment with it this year, but I don't believe it will be done next year.
With our current situation, if we expand we are looking for an assistant coach that was there at the combines, and have ample reason to take a team. Some of our assistants are assistants due to the limited number of teams available at that time so we are not trying to find someone who was not involved at all any of the combines. The teams meet at our draft, select a number for order of picking rather than go by record, and then we have staggered drafting system. If you would like to see it, it is stated in our league rules. Go to cyfl.net and under the Headlines on the right hand corner are our league rules link, click it and it will take you to them.
Coach Scott and Tiger One,
I appreciate your input, it is certainly a help in this matter. I am thankful that we have website such as this to get ideas from, I believe it will be helpful in this instance for our league.

CYFL, we have a similar combine system at our little league, but we don't have that many players on the teams. for us, 18 is a big roster. i really think that if you're looking to make a change, go ahead and make another team, it will make it more fun for all of those involved. we used to have about 25 per team, but when we bumped it down it became more exciting, and a lot of the kids that once didn't play very much emerged as some pretty good players. splitting the teams is a very good idea coach. let me know how it goes.
don't worry about what you don't know. if you had to know what you dont' know you would've learned it by now
Expansion did occur afterall, we had our last registration, and actually expanded beyond our expectations. Instead of having to expand in one division, we expanded all three in our town. So we will introduce the Victoria Oilers in all three divisions(Senior(10-12 years old), Junior(8-9 years old), and Pee-wee(6-7 years old)).

There are a lot of good people involved and without your help, we wouldn't be where we are today. Thank you Coach for supporting our program as much as you have. Go CYFL! Go Vipers!

30 to a team... wow.... especially for any groups under the age of 12-13.
You can do BOTH!!!!
We have a youth program that has over 425 kids in the tackle program 3rd-6th grade. It is our goal to have 17-20 player teams - no more than that. Allows for a good mix of playing time as well as quality coaching time.
Based upon our evaluation and truely "blind" draft process all coaches have an equal balance of talent and size. It was fully implemented this season and ALL of our teams were competitive not only with in our community but against the other communities. I can say with certainty that this past season had the LEAST number of complaints and issues since I have been involved....
