Installing Today’s Hybrid Pistol Offense Run & Pass from Top to Bottom
This manual provides you with the full offensive line, receiver, and quarterback mechanics for installing each offensive play presented. Coach Campbell has left no stone unturned for implementing today’s Pistol Offense into your program.
while doing team stretches do you have leaders count while the rest of the team quietly stretches, do you have the whole team count aloud and stretch so that they are not tempted to talk, do you have nobody count and just switch to the next stretch when they feel ready, or do you stretch by position.thanks
We don't stretch at all. It is a total waste of time. We usually start practice with an individual period and work our way to full speed. we didn't have a single muscle pull last year.
We used to do a moving Nebraska type stretch but it wastes the first 10 minutes of practice every day.
Trust me, kids don't need to stretch before practice. How many of them stretch when they play pickup basketball with their friends? Do they ever pull muscles there?

Wow, I don't agree at all. As a player the correct way to get ready to play is using a dynamic warm-up, then stretch. You do not want to stretch a cold muscle. Same as stretching a cold rubber band, not a good idea. You need to heat up the body, then stretch.
Any coach who does not stretch his athletes either dynamically or conventionally is making a HUGE mistake! You are also doing your athletes a great diservice by toying with their physical well being. In 42 years of on field coaching, I have never heard of anything as absurd as that. Please do not take this as a personal affront, but that idea is ridiculous. Any athlete who has played the game will tell you that stretching is certainly not a "complete waste of time" in any sport! Can you imagine going to a track meet and not having the runners stretch??? I played Football, Basketball, and Baseball as a young man and will be the first to tell you I am shocked to hear a coach make a statement such as that. How long have you been a coach and did you play?

The answer is somewhere in between. Rebels, you can't argue with success. If you didn't pull any muscles, you know that you're doing something right; however, I am an advocate of a MAXIMUM of five minutes of mobile stretching. The reason why--psychological reasons.
This is a very, very interesting topic.

I am shocked to read your post! Wait until the hip flexors, groins, quads, calves, traps, deltoids and all the rest sart going. I certainly would not deem it successful to not stretch under any circumstance. Pull a groin
and it is 3 full months to get it back right!!! Your a college coach, see what coach Duda would say if you tell him you decided your not going to stretch your linebackers out anymore!

Added thought: That would be akin to me telling my QB's an hour before the game, "don't worry about stretching your throwing arm, it is all a waste of time anyway. Then, about the time he throws two passes and he is on the bench with a pulled biceps, tricep, etc. try to tell him not to stretch anymore!

Added thought: I am convinced it is not a physcological factor, but a WELL DOCUMENTED PHYSICAL FACTOR INVOLVED HERE. True, we no longer use all the conventional stretches as some are a waste of time, but we will always do 10 minutes of DYNAMIC STRETCHING as a team without fail. For those players who do not feel the dynamic stretches are enough, we tell them to do what they feel comfortable with but come out early to do the time consumming conventional stretches on their own time, not the teams.

Our QB's start off with a drill we call the noose drill. The QB's throw to receivers at distance of 5 yards. The receivers start off at a jog and work to full speed throughout the course of the drill. They will then do PAT drill.
We throw the ball about 65/70% of the time and QB's had no arm trouble last year. We take care of our athletes.
Our lineman start off going through steps on boards. Same thing, they will start off slow and work to full speed.
Before this we did the Nebraska Moving Stretch. It worked well but just seemed like a waste of 10 minutes every day.
This works better for us. The only reason to stretch is for team building.
I will say this. Have you seen teams stretch their necks before games/practice? That seems like the most irresponsible thing I've ever seen. Why would you tire out your neck before contact.
I know coaches that start practice with blitz pickup and go full tilt. We don't go full tilt but we found a happy medium. I guess we can agree to disagree.
i wrestle back and forth with the whole stretching routine. watching 50 players and having 20 take it seriously and 30 jack around gets old with me. i viewed it as a waste of time. we went to the dynamic stretch and i will never go back to the old routine.
Total Stretch = 15 mins
First 8 mins is all players lined up on goal line going thru dynamic routine. all players stay active and i am happy about that.
Whistle blows, we break it out as a TEAM, and all players go to INDY time where they have additional 7 minutes to work on their own stretch in a small group circle.
The saying goes "do you ever see a dog stretch before he chases a car?" I have heard of coaches that don't stretch and they swear by it. We stretch in lines. But there is evidence out there that backs up the claims. So I am told. I think stretching is more important for flexibility reasons so I am glad we do it. It also depends on how you start your practice. You can work the kids loose in INDY time, but I always liked to get a good sweat up before I started my back peddling and change of direction drills as a player. But do I think its irresponsible no. Its out there and people are doing it.
I agree with your point about flixibility. One thing we will do a lot during off season workouts is partner stretch after workouts. You touch your toes while someone behind your helps push you down. We do this for other stretches as well. we find it helps with recovery and flexibility.
For the hardcore stretchers:
1) You stretch for a half hour about an hour before kickoff. You then go back to the locker room pep talk and do all that stuff. When you come back out just before kickoff do you stretch again or just do the customary 10 jumping jacks? If stretching is that important shouldn't you stretch again? All your players have tightened up in the that time period.
2) It is late in the third quarter. Your star corner gets hurt. You need a his backup in there for the next play but the kid hasn't stretched in 2 and 1/2 hours. How long does he stretch before he goes in? Does he take 10 minutes to go through a dynamic warmup or does he just touch his toes and go to work? Do you leave it up to your players to stay loose?
Dynamic stretch for 5 minutes. This was 1 of the best things I ever incorporated into practice. 1 pulled groin last year, happened in middle of 3rd quarter of playoff game.
