Coach I don't know about a coach to kid ration, but if you AD is willing to give you more coaching stipends then take it, Sell him on what you think it is going to take to coach 50+ athletes. Coach CAmpbell
While trying to get a coaching postion added to my staff I did a study of the state champions and runner ups in Indiana and the average coach to player ratio was 8 to 1.
An ideal staff features one HC, two coordinators, A line coach, A QB Coach, a receivers coach, and a RB coach (each with an assistant as well) on the offensive side of the ball. A good TE coach is an added plus! A DL coach, a DE coach, A LB coach, and a secondary coach (all with at least one assistant) on the defensive side of the ball. A special Teams coach who really knows his stuff is a must in my book!
Now lets face it: On the HS level you are lucky to have 8-9 at a big school with half of those being volunteers. So, I always had my eyes peeled for guys who knew their business (retired coaches are a great scorce) who would be willing to volunteer their services and time to help the kids. You will be surprised with the guys you can come up with! I always had scouts for the following weeks opponent and paid their gas and a meal out of my pocket to insure they were being appreciated! It always seemed to pay big dividends for us. If you can train your JV coaches correctly, bring them on board on game nights as well. They can do everything from be upstairs in the booth with the OC and DC, chart plays, attend to sideline needs of the players, etc. IT IS ALL ABOUT HOW WELL YOU ARE ORGANIZED AS A HC. Just my opinion as always.
