Installing Today’s Hybrid Pistol Offense Run & Pass from Top to Bottom
This manual provides you with the full offensive line, receiver, and quarterback mechanics for installing each offensive play presented. Coach Campbell has left no stone unturned for implementing today’s Pistol Offense into your program.
I have about 45 min. each practice for OL group work and perimeter work. My question is how do I get fundamental work in (boards, chutes, pulls/traps, etc.) and still teach them the adjustments to plays that we are running that week?
Divide the 45 minutes of time you have (EXCLUDING "TEAM" PERIOD) into three 15 minute periods:
1. INDIVIDUAL (such as 1 on 1)
2. SMALL GROUP (something like "2 on 2" or "3 on 3")
3. LARGE GROUP (something like "5 on 5" or, if you have the TE's - "7 vs 7")
This format is used by most every coach I know! The "adjustments" to the plays can be taught in LARGE GROUP (& to a lesser degree in Small Group)!
You can incorporate a "Pre-Practice" period and you can utilize that time for assignments. Make sure you go over the blocking schemes vs. the fronts you expect that week. Also, when we have our daily special teams period, our O-Line coach will work our PAT/FG protection and when finished uses the rest of the period as his "assignment" time with the linemen.
I always looked at it a bit differently I guess, but I took care of the TEACHING ASPECTS in team X and O sessions. Then when we went to the field, teaching is far less important to me than REPITION is. Always used basically the same program as ONEBACK by dividing the time into three parts. You train a young coon dog by letting him run with the big dogs and a young football player learns the same way, by emulating the more experienced players at his position. Class room is for teaching, the field is for repping!
Just my way as always. But, you will be surprised how quickly a young player can pick up a technique by working with an experienced athlete in scrimmage or drill periods, OR GAMES!!!

I appreciate the advice. I do feel I have been doing far too much "talking" and not enough repping. Especially in the first few weeks of practice. This week we have repping more and I have bben correcting on the fly. It was a little rocky at the first of the week, but it seemed to be sinking in to them yesterday and we had fewer missed assignments in the passing game than we have ever had since I have been here.
Is 10 min enough to get in one on one time. I have 38 OL.
If you have an assistant line coach, as well as, THE line coach 10 minutes is pushing it but it can be done I guess. 38 OL's, what a blessing! How are you going to play them all? Never heard of that many. What do you feed those kids where you coach? Haha Thats 19 sets of ONE ON ONE and that takes coaches to get it done right, how many coaches do you have?

Now when I say OL, I use the term loosely. They range from 6'5" 300 to 5'7" 165. The philosophy here is "if they ain't athletes they need to play on the line." I don't lament about it, I work with what I've got. I have one other coach with me. He is an excellent coach, we just need to find a way to get these guys the fundamental time that is needed along with the scheme work that is required. I am implementing pre-practice time to work with the kids certain aspects of the game. This week, I worked BOB protection with my OTs cause I kick slide was more of a hinge. Next week I will mostly likely be working on counter pulls as the OT are to tight to the LOS when they pull. It is just those little things like that, for which I am having trouble finding time to fix. And you know that little things can lose you a game fast.
I have 14 on varsity and I have to keep reminding myself to get more groups so I can get more reps. Its great doing sled work with that number however because it works out nice for 3 groups. I feel for our RB's coach however. He has 13 JV backs!! To make matters worse we have 16 JV receivers!!!
