Hi, I am a line coach for a Jr. Football program. Need a little advice on zone blocking from a spread offense when facing a 6 man front with the d-line shooting different gaps at any given time. What is the possibility of secondary blocking LBrs when facing a 6 man front? Any help would be great. Thanks, Matt
If they have "6 in the box" you need AT LEAST 5 blockers (6 would be better). If you have only 5 blockers - the QB must keep the backside DE honest with the fake (or actually run) the "keeper" (bootleg) to his side.
ANYTIME they have more defenders than you have blockers - you must be very CREATIVE in handling the unblocked defender.
Vs teams that try to "take the gaps" - it is important in zone blocking to cut your splits way down to 12" to 18" at MOST. Also to line the O-Line as far off the ball as legal.
NFL O-Line Coach - Steve Loney - has a 2004 video out on zone blocking in which he gives ALL the many ways you handled the unblocked defender (with the "keeper" being just one, & a reverse series among the several others). Get info on how to order the video from:
