What are your opinions on using a TE or not in Shotgun? I really like spreading teams out, but have a kid that has a perfect TE body. I can spread him out and motion him to block or use him as a true TE in a 3 point. I would put him in the slot and run towards him and motion him. What do you guys like better?
I ran spread with a TE the whole year last year. I liked it because in short yardage and redzone situations you can have a solid threat in the flats, and someone to keep to SS honest. Running him on a quick skinny post off the zone stuff also worked well. Next year I intend on turning my TE into more of an H back style guy, lined up 3x3 from the T's outside foot. This can really screw with the Dends and allows the QB to have abit more room to run underneath him in the Opt or Zone Read. I think that this should allow us to still do what we used to and enables us to have him help on our WR screen and Flash game. Wham blocking and motioning him into the backfield should also be a plus. You can also still run the Trip Opt with him in there but it's not as effective as having a balanced double slot attack in that you can't run it to either side with the Flip call.
I like using the TE because you can pretty much dictate what coverage a team will be in by your TE alignment. as well as were you will be getting a 1 tech or 3 tech, 5 tech or a 7.
What type of plays do you run? Having a BSTE if you run a ton of IZ can be great to create that cutback lane. A PSTE can also be good if you're looking to run option or OZ and you know you can get a 7 tech from the DE....
There are many ways.
1) 3-Step passing game works good
2) Sprint out passing away from him works better because of his block.
3) Load, Lead Option option towards him works good.
4) Also because we still run down and jet and it works just as well for us and in the boot game the drag is there.
We use a TE for specific plays and then widen him out, with the kids today I sure that you can find a good enought athlete to handle both situations. Will also flex him out to make the defense adjust to us and not vice versa.
I once had James Coley, a 6'8 280 lb All American TE from Clemson Univ. on my professional Minor League team. He was a tremendous blocker but he coud catch and run after the catch!!! I had him block 10% of the time and utilized him as a receiver 90 % of the time, the exact opposite of how most TE's are used. But, when you get a great one, put him to work as something more than a blocker!
