Numbers or Techique?

For me its techniques.
Midline at a 3
IV at a 5
Load at a 4i


I just finished reading Tim Stowers book (Flexbone) and he counted OUT from the read.

On IV he counted defenders outside the B gap, and numbered them 1-3. He told he QB to count each side and if there was a side with only two defenders run that way. If both sides had 3, then go to the widest side of the field.

Pete Ventrelli was a longtime split veer guy from Downers Grove North in IL. He counted every defender on defense and ran to the numbers advantage.

As far as numbers go...
We run from the flexbone. So, if a defense is completely balanced, then it will have 1 or 3 defenders on the midline. If a defense has 0, 2 or 4, then they are not balanced and we have a numbers advantage.

As far as techniques go...
We look for a 3-technique to run midline (we always start there). If we get a 3-tech, then we are running midline. For ISV vs. OSV, we look for #2. If he is off the LOS, then we run ISV. If he is on the LOS, then we run OSV. At least, these are our general rules for best option.

Pitch off of EMOL

Other way to block the perimiter

Back blocks force
WR blocks CB
Pitch off of EMOL

Its an outside double option. Use what you can block. I have talked to coaches who cant find a back to block the EMOL so they choose of the other two. Run the one that your personnel can execute
