Installing Today’s Hybrid Pistol Offense Run & Pass from Top to Bottom
This manual provides you with the full offensive line, receiver, and quarterback mechanics for installing each offensive play presented. Coach Campbell has left no stone unturned for implementing today’s Pistol Offense into your program.
I am a coach that has been running the triple option out of the double wing set, and want to run it out of the gun. I am ok with the QB and running back mesh but not sure about the zone blocking. Can you run it off of the dart play and puul the tackle even if you call the option. That way the if the DE stays at home the QB can give it to the back and you will still be able to run dart. My o-line is not very big and they are grtting stronger but not sure if they will be able to zone block. Any help would be great.
Coach Boone,
We have been running the spread gun for two years. It has been our experience that the zone plays help the smaller athletic lineman. It helps becuase they are working combos on the interior lineman (4 hands) and then tracking the linebackers with 4 eyes. They just have to get the read key moving so the tailback can make his cut. The lineman work the down defender and the runningback makes the lineman right by reading his key. Coach Campbell's Installing Gun Option does a great job explaining the line calls. We have experimented with the triple from gun but have not had the success that we have with the read option. So I don't know if I can help with the triple (studying Tony DeMeo's tapes now), but we have used the dart with great success. We run the dart with the quarterback and the tailback. When we run it with the tailback, the QB reads the C gap defender. The tailback gives a counter step like we are running speed and then follows the pulling tackle. If the C-gap defender crashes, the QB pulls the ball. If we run it with the QB, we deke fake the tailback (responsible for 5 tech) across the mesh and the QB then follows the pulling tackle. A key coaching point for us was having the pulling tackle read the guards block and decide what gap (A or B) he would use to isolate on the playside backer. We don't use a tight end and usually line up in 2x2, 3x1, empty, and some 2 back. We have to have a 5/6 man box for this play to be successful. Not sure if this is was what you were looking for, but let me if there is anything I can do to help.
Coach this might sound stupid but I am just starting to learn about the spread offense but what is the difference between the triple option and the read option in the gun. What DVD's would the best to buy, I got the West Virigina inside and outside run plays DVD but to me it really does not help. Thabks for the reply.
The read option you will block outside zone to the call and read the backside DE or c gap player (if the D is stunting) for a give / pull read. If it is a give the RB runs zone, if it is a pull the QB runs off tackle opposite of the callside. Urban Meyer with both Florida and Utah utilized this play a lot. The RB typically will align away from the call.
In triple, not that I have ran this much but, typically your give read will be playside DE. The QB will mesh with the playside back for the read. If the DE does anything but play dive you give. If the DE does play dive the QB pulls and then you option off typically the force player or first defender to show. In order to do this you either need two backs with the backside going in a short motion behind QB to get in pitch relationship just before the snap or to have a WR take a few steps back to get in pitch relationship. Again Florida runs this a ton.
Coaches if I got anything wrong please correct me

jsk002 did a great job explaning the difference between the two. The triple, to us, requires more timing to make successful. The QB reads the frontside defensive end, getting a back into pitch relationship, reading the force for the pitch key. Great play, but have to be committed to making it work from day 1. We use the outside and inside zone with our read option, depending on the defense. If the QB pulls the ball, we prefer to have him keep the ball because he is our best athlete. Some teams will motion a guy into pitch relationship or have a receiver step back off the line.
As far as resources, check out Coach Campbell's Installing the Gun Offense if you are interested in this offense. With our zone plays, his "near ear" rule and line calls have helped us tremendously. As far as the triple, Tony DeMeo's tapes seem to be the most popular. I have them, but have not had a chance to break them down in depth. Let me know if I can help.
