Installing Today’s Hybrid Pistol Offense Run & Pass from Top to Bottom
This manual provides you with the full offensive line, receiver, and quarterback mechanics for installing each offensive play presented. Coach Campbell has left no stone unturned for implementing today’s Pistol Offense into your program.
I have seen an offence based on four wide outs on the right in close formation, only the QB in the back field (under the centre) and either a TE or SE.
From this there is the screen pass, a multiple of pass patterns to the four wide outs, a pass to the TE, a run (the QB used here is a good ball carrier) around the TE with pulling guard and the QB sneak.
I would play some type of quarter, quarter, half. Man up the TE. Put the Strong side corner over #1 and he has deep third or (fourth), have the SS collision and jam either #2 or #3 depending on tendency and width - then cover the flat, etc, have a DE or OLB type collision and jam #4 or #3 - then defend curl, possibly have the PS ILB widen just a little and cover hook, have the BS ILB hook to curl, and the FS deep 1/3 or 1/4. What do you think?
Do you think that would expose you to the run around the outside, or the screen pass?
The wideouts are set in a diamond formation, front man (large FB), next two, off the line are set back 2 feet and split two feet, the final back (quick WR) is behind the front man, set about one yard deep. This tight formation is about 15 yards from the QB. As the screen pass is a lateral then the other three wideouts can block from the snap.
JUST ANOTHER VARIATION OF THE QUAD FORMATION. I HAVE THE BEST LUCK WITH THESE WIERD FORMATIONS WE DON'T SEE OFTEN, OR NEVER HAD SEEN PREVIOUSLY, BY JUST MANNING UP STRAIGHT ACROSS THE BOARD WITH SOME VERY SIMPLE RULES THAT ARE NEVER TO BE BROKEN:
1. CB TAKES #1 RECEIVER ( THIS CASE THE FB TYPE THAT YOU DESCRIBE) IN TIGHT MAN!
2. SS TAKES # 2 RECEIVER IN TIGHT MAN
3. LB TAKES # 3 RECEIVER IN TITE MAN
4. FS CHEATS UP IN PSL BUT STAYS IN MOF! ON THE SNAP HE JUMPS THE # 4!
5. WILL LB HAS BACKSIDE RECEIVER AND PLAYS HIM IN LOOSE MAN (SITS OFF 4-5 YDS )
*** TIGHT MAN = ROLLED UP HARD WITH INSIDE LEVERAGE ONLY PLAYING BUMP AND RUN AND DOING THEIR DARDNEST TO NOT LET THE RECEIVER GET OFF THE JAM! ***
Coaching Point: May not be the greatest way to defend, but it gives you a solid plan to have ready when you come against this wierd formation baloney. Your defensive captain should recognize any strange formation immediately. When he does this for us, he immediately calls out 99-99!!! This tells the defense to scrap the huddle call and immediately go to their man in tight man coverage! Just our way, but it has saved us from looking and acting like we are lost when this scenario occurs, shows we are prepared with a plan, and really is quite effective until you can get the adjustment made.

Work your guys on "switching" technique that is the same move that a basketball player uses when playing man to man on the roundball court. Teach them to COMMUNICATE and not fall victim to the picks and rubs that occur naturally in any bunch formation, crossing routes, etc.

The FS must key the QB no matter what. He should be especially concerned with some sort of double pass, throw-back play. If the QB runs, the FS is going to be the free hitter and must come up in a hurry. The 0 tech. must not take a side.
If we know it is coming, we will try to devise some sort of a scheme similiar to what Coach Easton described.
Note: You might prefer to have the SLB on the TE and both CBs over to the quads side.
