Installing Today’s Hybrid Pistol Offense Run & Pass from Top to Bottom
This manual provides you with the full offensive line, receiver, and quarterback mechanics for installing each offensive play presented. Coach Campbell has left no stone unturned for implementing today’s Pistol Offense into your program.
I will put in my two cents here on one point. The Achillies heel of the 46 is the three step game (maybe weak-side option too). As d-line coach, your kids need to be aware that if it is a pass play and the man in front of them cuts them, they need to get their hands in the air and bat the ball down. If you are going to run the 46 as more than just a change up, and you play a team that is proficent in the three step game, you must ROTATE COVERAGE with a PRE-SNAP call, often in conjunction with a blitz. e.g. In the Pats-Panthers Superbowl, Carolina used the 46 extensively but DID NOT ROTATE COVERAGE and Brady ate them up with 3 step passes.
That is good. The 3 tech. away from the side you rotate towards can really help the CB on an island if he can get his hands up and take away the slant.
Thanks guys for all of your help. Between the info. I received here and the Ryan 46 defense book, I feel like I've been coaching this defense for years. Thanks for all of your help. If I have more questions I won't be afraid to ask. Hopefully I'll run into some of you guys at the clinics. Did Atlanta already. Chicago this weekend (home), Univ. of Illinois - 3.29.07, and Northwestern in April.Coach Robinson, Morgan Park H.S., I'll have my old jr. high team's tag on...CPS Wolfpack
In response to your question on how best to defend a fold is by the right depth positioning in the PSL of the LB's. Just my opinion as always, but this single factor determines in my mind if we can fold or not.

I get a kick out of terminology for secondary coverages. For years what ONEBACK aptly described as cover # 1 today, we simply called SOLO MAN. ( EVERYBODY BUT THE fs WHO STAYED HOME IN THE mof UNTIL HE WENT TO HELP OUT SOMEWHERE PLAYS MAN.)
COVER # 2 FOR YEARS (STRAIGHT ZONE) FEATURED THE TWIN SAFTIES EITHER ON THE HASHES AT 10-12 YARDS AND THE CORNERS OFF ON THE WEAKSIDE AT 7-9 YDS AND THE STRONG OFF AT 5-7 YDS , BOTH WITH OUTSIDE LEVERAGE. NOW, FOR THE MOST PART, IT HAS BECOME A COMBO COVERAGE WITH THE CB'S ROLLED UP HARD WITH INSIDE LEVERAGE OR SITTING OFF WITH INSIDE LEVERAGE AT 7 YDS OR SO IN WHAT WE CALL "LOOSE MAN".
COVER #3 SEEMS TO BE THE ONLY ONE THAT NEVER CHANGES MUCH.
WE USED TO PLAY ALOT OF CLOUD AND SKY ALSO.
