COACHES,
I would like to hear some of y'alls opinions, teaching progressions, philosophies on the art of TACKLING CORRECTLY.
As I watch the so called best programs in the country on both the Div.1-A college level and the NFL itself,
continue to make the same basic mistake of ignoring the FUNDAMENTALS of the art of tackling week after week, it is really nauseating to me.
First off, this hitting the ball carrier to high!!! It always made sense to me that if a 180 lb. DB hits a 245 lb. RB on an open field tackle, HE HAD BETTER STAY LOW
, SEE WHAT HE HITS, HIT THE BALL CARRIER BELOW THE WAIST AND WRAP HIS LEGS UP, LOCK UP AND PUT HIM DOWN. This emphasis of putting your hat on the ball when making a tackle, IMO, is where it all started. Pretty hard to make impact on the ball if your hitting below the waist, but have always been of the school that dictates FIRST MAN MAKES THE TACKLE, LET THE SECOND MAN THAT MAKES CONTACT WORRY ABOUT STRIPPING THE BALL. YOU HIT THE GUY HIGH, HE ENDS UP WITH CONSIDERABLE ADDITIONAL YARDAGE ALMOST EVERY TIME.
The other thing, IMO, responsible for so much more addiitonal yardage by the ball carrier is this shoulder roll tackle baloney!!! I am not saying that there is not times that it is very effective. But, those times are when it is impossible to hit the man in a good fundamental tackle position, not play after play aftr play!!!
I would love to hear from y'all on this topic.
