Installing Today’s Hybrid Pistol Offense Run & Pass from Top to Bottom
This manual provides you with the full offensive line, receiver, and quarterback mechanics for installing each offensive play presented. Coach Campbell has left no stone unturned for implementing today’s Pistol Offense into your program.
We are a spread offense, shotgun. We have had problems in the past being successful in short yardage and inside the 5 yard line. This year we tried 2 TE and FB and TB with QB under Center. This wasn't very successful either. #1 it took practice time away from our base offense. What do you have success with out of spread in these situations.
I think u either have to commit to a short yardage / goal line set of plays. Whether is an I formation package or double tight formation, it needs to be apart of the offense. I have coached the spread and have had went up and down the field on the opponent, only to have failed to put points on the board inside the red zone. I watched UK play Clemson yesterday and the UK hurt them with both offensive sets (I formation and the spread).
Defensively, your opponent will have to prepare more if you have different sets. It makes preparation more difficult on their end.
You may want to consider running more of the Non-spread offense when you are in different areas on the field, NOT just inside the red zone. Your teams needs to become confident in that set.
I'm not a true spread guy even though I am told we are spread team. I personally think having the QB under center, especially on short yardage or goalline puts more pressure on a defense. Inside the 5, I like to go single back with split and slot receivers to both sides.
1. Teams know we want to throw the ball so typically we see a man under cover two look.
2. They must defend both A gaps as well as straight over the center immediately or the sneak is there.
3. My favorite play is outside veer double option. I am also not an true option guy but I have found that teaching that read is a very easy read for QBs. Read the end and either give or keep. No pitch read.
We have had phenominal success the last two year running this. Last year our QB had 11 TDs rushing.
Excellent Choice.

This question kind of solidifies why I will never drink the kool-aid of the shotgun spread offense fad. I always feel that in order to be successful in high school in certain situations, you need to have the ability to get 2-3 backs in there with the QB under C and be tough and pound the football.
But, like one coach pointed out, that's a big departure from your "base offense" if you are a spread team.
obviously, they have more practice time being a college team, but Upper Iowa is a spread team. In the goalline, they have a DT line up at FB and go to Power I.
COACH,
I GAVE UP OPTION FOOTBALL 20 YEARS AGO IN FAVOR OF A 3 X 2 SPREAD THAT HAS WON CONSISTENTLY FOR US EVER SINCE, INCLUDING THE 1994 AFL SUPER BOWL CHAMPIONSHIP AGAINST A TEAM THAT HAD WENT 15-0 UNDEFEATED COMING INTO THE GAME, WE WERE 13-2 AND 14 POINT UNDERDOGS. THEY GOT THEIR 14 POINTS ALL RIGHT, BUT WE GOT 20 TO WIN!!! I said that to qualify myself to offer the following advice to your question: From the 20 to the 20 spread football is the greatest offense ever devised, IMO. But, it is reality not just talk that when you get into the redzone the passing lanes really do shrink and become mush easier to defend! So, armed with that knowledge from the git go I schemed to build a short yardage and goal line unit that could run the ball straight ahead with authority and score consistently!!! I built the attack around the DBLE TITE STACK I, POWER I, STRAIGHT T FULL HOUSE, THE ORIGINAL SINGLE WING BOX FORMATION!!! To be on the power team was a privilege because only the best, toughest, meanest, best blockers on the team were elgible for it! My theory has always been when in real need, nothing fancy, just put at least 2 blockers, not just one, in front of the ball carrier and jam it down their throats!!! It always worked welll for us.
