Installing Today’s Hybrid Pistol Offense Run & Pass from Top to Bottom
This manual provides you with the full offensive line, receiver, and quarterback mechanics for installing each offensive play presented. Coach Campbell has left no stone unturned for implementing today’s Pistol Offense into your program.
I am green option coach. Really I am a multiple formation wing T coach (under center and shotgun). I want to add midline atleast and veer option at the most for two reasons: 1) I have 2 running QB's coming in who are decent passers and 2) I want to expand our playbook with option because I believe it will give teams in our league fits (they see basic pro and basic wing T primarily).
My question: is putting in option more difficult from the gun or under center. We have a center who can snap gun. I know the teaching time required will not allow us to do both but, I need one.
We have 2 option type quarterbacks, a handful of small scat back type running backs, a above average reciever, and one big fullback. Any suggestions?
We ran a version of the shotgun spread option this year. We installed it with the no huddle concept, when we got to the end of the year we put in the wing t with it. We ran the option from gun/ under/ wingt/ spread, we ran it from every formation without discrimination.
It can be done. Ohio University, Frank Zolich, just makes a straight rule run the option to the man on the end of the line of scrimmage. If a backer walks up and covers the end man, the option on the backer. He feels that they can zone to the point of attack and block down away from the option man, they can also kick out the outside man on the second level.
Anyway, to make things more simple, you can keep whatever option rules you choose the same for under or gun, inside or out. Phil. Eagles run some Utah Urban Meyer stuff with McNabb, they do it in the clutch. The wing T variations fromthe gun and under, we feel is a great tool. Our head Coach is in love with the option, he tries to find a way to make it work out of every formation. We try to keep continuity in the blocking schemes no matter the formation, some variance is a must though, just to make it all work.
Head up to outside tackle can be optioned, first man outside Guard, ELOS man, first man outside on second level.
We feel the option is great because the QB can always make the right choice. Teach him correctly and get him to buy into it. Then tell him, one play will make more than the other, give or keep. We will make yards either way mentallity. It can be frustrating to the qb and FB,slot back, wing back, z rec., getting pitch relationship or the biggy is let the qb give or take, those other cats can't be trying to take the ball from the qb. When you get the qb to a place of reading correctly, build him up... He can't go wrong making the choice in the option, make the defense guess, not your qb. We read it always, no guessing, no outright option look. Pre canned option plays, aren't running the option, to it's fullest, ifyou consider running it at all.
We can talk more if you like.
1. first guy head up to outside tackle, is the base we always start here first, for the read triple option
We have used splits from foot to foot, all the way to 3-4 yds. if we need help getting them where it suits us best. Of course if they widen out too far we just give to FB.
we have also modified to face 3 man fronts, as well as TNT
this is harder but depending on if they stack
We can zone block back side, or any scheme that we choose. Ohio Univeristy's QB runs a 5.0- 40 and they run the option, they made a bowl game this year. they use rule #2. If you have a fast qb that can read, you'll have much success, if you have an average to slow qb that has some brains, then you'll do okay. Our Defense gets used to running against our option that when they play non read option teams, they can tell the difference and eat their lunch.
2. End man on line of scrimmage.
then depending on who give us fits, may use a TE, and go to #3
3. First man 2nd level, outside the end of the line.
If you have trouble taking the option to the 1st level, then block it down on POA, go Second level/or pull from backside, take the option to the backer/ safety/ corner, whoever takes that position, or however they defense aligns to your formations.
rmac22, can one of your qb's run like a tailback?? You could go gun and have both of them back there, have the option to run or pass with both of them on some plays. Get everyone guessing who is going to get the ball, and what are they going to do with it? Kind of like Florida, Utah, Miami, direct snap type stuff.
I think you can do both if your skill kids only have to go one way. We run the gun option and we have run the I-veer prior to that. The colleges run both, but again their practices are split so the offense only works on that phase. If you worked on certain plays in the spring for both, you might be able see if they can handle it.
just back from the DEMEO spring clinic.awesome.i was an old traditional UC triple guy but was convinced by DEMEO and his QB's that the GUN is the way to go for triple.easier to read, less head shots on the QB etc.i want to combine zone read pitch with gun veer triple to mess up the DE even more and this seemed easy to do when i watched his spring practice.
