Coaches,
I was having a friendly debate yesterday with a coaching friend I respect about the subtleties in the difference between IZ and OZ concerning o-line block tech’s/QB steps/RB paths & reads. And he told me that at are next meeting he wants to continue our friendly debate and list the pro’s/con’s of blocking IZ/OZ differently vs blocking them the same way. He has no experience coaching HS offense and “likes” the idea of doing them the same; I have experience coaching HS offense and “do it” different So I have a debate/question I’d like to get feedback on. Here is my question:
“What are the pro’s and con’s to blocking Inside Zone and Outside Zone the exact same way, meaning no difference in aiming points or type/width’s of step between the two. (QB/RB stuff would obviously have to be different between the two)”. I know that there are some teams that do this. Minnesota for example, (based on a 2 TE/2 WR I read on them) does this and just changes the QB/RB stuff.
Background info on me: I am a 10yr HS coach, the last 4 as OC. I am a “disciple” of Coach Mountjoy “ONEBACK” and essentially installed my entire offense based on his ONEBACK offense (IZ/OZ, Cntr/Pwr, 3 & 5-step Drop Back Pass). I chose this offense because #1 I liked it, #2 I believe in it, #3 I knew it would be a great fit based on what we see around here (NJ). If one of those 3 were true I wouldn’t have done it. In terms of Run Game we were “good” at IZ/OZ. But we were “great” at Cntr/Pwr, that was our bread and butter. Coach Mountjoy has seen film on us and he can attest to this (our RB had 1800+ yds and 30+ TD’s on 250+carries and a great number of them came from the Cnr/Pwr series). We were a running team that passed when we had to and ultimately that is what did us in late in the playoffs. We went 8-3 and lost to the #6 and #7 teams in the State of NJ. We reexamining our IZ/OZ in the off-season to see what, if anything, we can do to it to go from “good” to “great”. We already know we have to do a better job with backside cut-off.
Thanks a lot and look for to get everyone’s input since this is since great site (and have read it for years religious)
