For our coaches from Canada I have started a forum to discuss topics for coaches up above. It would be nice to discuus a football field the size of Texas and 12 players on the field at one time. Coach Campbell
Don't forget the unlimited motion by recievers and backs, forward motion of the slots who can be full speed at the snap, the ROUGE, and the 1 yd neutral zone.
Oh ya... as an old CFL slogan used to say "Our Balls are Bigger" It's true - :+)
Now if you guys could just play..... Hehehehe just kidding. How is your squad looking for the upcoming season? Got all your coaching problems that arose last year under control, I know you have by now.
Have you added any new wrinkles on both sides of the ball? How is the QB race shaping up? Who is going to start(as a result of coming out of spring practice) or are you going to wait to name a starter?
Hope you are working them this summer and your weight room attendance is where it should be if they are serious about winning. What do your summer cardiovascular regimens consist of these days? What was your general overall opinion of the results of spring practice?

We haven't yet entered Spring Ball - we will in the next 2 weeks. I have many players who are multi-sport athletes - and GOOD ones. I share them with soccer and track (where they've been piling up medals - due to our weight program). The back sports field has also been redone, which is GREAT but we've got to stay off it until August - so that limits what we can do. Our facility might be closed AGAIN this summer - we are redoing the flooring one of our gyms - and it will depend on the contractor. However, we did get a grant for some new Squat?power racks and a couple sets of new dumbells from the gov't. So that is good.
I'll be planning to have the Weight Room open 2-3 days per week, and we may do some mat drills in the 'old' gym - and some tire flips as well as some tug-of-war type drills with some tires. We're going to follow the BFS conditioning program.
The weightroom attendance has been a little down and that has been MY fault. With the OC opening the room after school - a few kids decided it was easier to sleep in - except over the year they haven't shown up as much. SO... lesson learned. Next year it will be manditory in the morning - no options. However, we have had a bunch working out at a local fitness club. But.. live and learn.
QB is basically set - same guy as last year. He'll have 2 more years before graduating, and impressed some local college guys at a combine here. We will be running the same stuff as last year mostly - we don't have a speedy tailback so we'll likely be mostly running Power, Iso, Dive, and a counter off the ISO (the old I formaton Crossbuck). We may be in more of a 1 back set with 4 WR and a TE. I will be injecting more motion packages into my OC's plan this fall. We need to take more advantage of that facet of the game, IMO.
We will be adding a little more sprint-out and shotgun stuff. We'll have a "Triple Threat" play where we line up in a 3x2 with 1RB in the backfield (remember 12 men!). We're basically gap blocking the play to the 3 WR side, leaving the EMLOS there unblocked. QB's reading him for the handoff, on almost a dive track for the RB. If we pull it he'll boot playside and the 3WRs will be running flood routes (GO, Out, Flat or Post, Wheel, Flat).
It should be a good play for us - our kid is mobile and the field is 65yds wide. Alot of the CFL teams are running it, it is VERY simple and I really think we can make it work!
Coaching staff is coming together. I have 4 former players coming back to coach and they'll mostly be with the JV guys during practice. This will allow us to have a better structured practice schedule - we'll be switching the periods of practice a little; stretching in INDY to maximize fundamental work times. I always believe that former plays coming back to help is a GOOD sign for the program and the right way to get the volunteer coaches.
The OC is back, and he and I get along okay - we'll be talking more about philosophy in the coming weeks as track season here ends. He wants to be a HC some day, and I think next year we may 'flip' the O&D sides of the ball so he gets exposure there - and he'll be taking on a larger role with the JV team.
That DC is GONE and I'll be taking over those duties. We will be playing 'packaged' defenses (1st & 10; 2nd & Med; 2nd & Long; Goaline) to increase our 'speed' and the players will know what fronts we're likely to be in by D&D. We'll bring some pressure (at least 4-5 guys), and play Cov 3 (1st down, 2nd & Med), Cov 2 Man(2nd & Long), and Cov 0 (goaline, various downs).
I'm excited we will be a little younger, but we'll have 4 starters coming back on the OL, and a total of 9 returning on offense. On Defense we'll be much younger - but more athletic. We could be a team to watch for if things develop.
In the early fall we'll be really planning to 'run' the kids - and see who doesn't want to take part. I expect our numbers in Varsity will be higher - and we'll see who is really intrested in the COMMITMENT, not just wanting to be there part-time.
How are things up there in the land Y'll say "eh?" after everything? Hope the team is looking good and getting ready for the season that is just around the corner. I know you sounded excited after your last posting in May about your chances for this year! Hope all is well with you and the family, how is the baby coming along? My health is holding up well so far, today is my 22 month anniversary of my bad night and am doing good so far.

Have a question for you. Do your high school teams use the same basic rules (I'm sure there are some differences) that the CFL does? I mean field dimensions, all the men in motion, the one point rule, only 3 downs, 12 players instead of our 11? I really enjoy watching the CFL games on television and got to wondering about your high school rules.

Yes... same basic rules - it all applies. In Ontario it is also the "provincial" champ rules. I'd REALLY recommend our University ball - the CFL is very 'vanilla' as most of the teams like the NFl run similar offenses. I should send you some games from Cable TV. T
There's some GREAT things being done with motion - that frankly confuses the heck out of a defensive backfield.
In fact if you watch Montreal their OC is a former Canadian College HC & OC. They have a bunch of guys like that on their staff.
Check out Hamilton - that Jesse Lumsden guy is AMAZING the Skins had him last year and he's 100% Canadian. He is AMAZING.
110 x 65 yard wide field with 20yd deep endzones.
12 Men - unlimited motion by those not on the LOS. Those on the LOS can motion horizontally as long as they're NOT in a 3pt.
3 downs
1 yard neutral zone
The "rouge" applies (1pt rule) - missed fg's can be returned. I believe if we bring it out even an inch it goes to the 20.
The option of taking a field goal on your own 35 yard line or returning a KO.
No fair catch but a 5 yard exclusion zone. (15yd penalty) Thus the kicking team CANNOT down a kick.
Also... for onside kicks the ball only needs to be 'touched' or deflected out of bounds. Last team to touch it after the kick... gets possession. So you see alot of 'sky' sideline kicks.
Some city/county leagues still play US rules, but that's rare now. We have a pretty decent spring/summer league here and they play a merged version of the rules - mostly Canadian rules with 4 downs (game becomes rollerball).
Sorry I haven't replied to your earlier post, but My wife's been taking some Online courses AND working this summer so I've been Mr.Mom to our 2 year-old. This has been fun, rewarding, but hectic.
Often times I don't get on the computer to read posts until midnight - and even then I'm humming Sesame Street tunes or planning activities for her and I !!!!
My OC has a one-day QB camp he's put together this weekend - so I'm going to try and go out and pop in there for a few hours. He and I will be getting together before practices start to just get on the same page. I'll be the DC this year and I'm apprehensive about that but we'll just play some base fronts with a few covg packages (3, 2 Man, 0) and be done with it.
Hopefully this year we will STAY on the same page.
Thanks for the reply! Sounds like you have your hands full with the baby and all. Thanks for the break down of the rules you play by on the high school level. Have never been able to pick up one of your college games, only the CFL games.
You say your line can move laterally if not in a 3 point? So, if you just stood everybody up and motioned them one way or the other, you could very effectively run some type of sweep that would bring to mind the old Green Bay power sweep of Lombardi days? Motion has always been my thing, I would think I died and went to heaven for sure if I could motion the whole backfield!!! Hehehe
Best of luck in the soon coming season? When do y'all start?
