Hey Coaches,
Need your help or advice. I have only been a fulltime/certified teacher for 4 yrs. I got into the business a little later than most at 29. A very good high school job has opened up just recently and i have had several head coaches ask if i was going to apply. My response, of course, is that they wont hire me beacuse of my "lack of experience". Now i believe i can do the job, i was just wondering when you should start applying for head jobs. Or should i apply no matter the circumstances??? Of course the encouraging aspect is that these other head coaches think im ready, but they dont do the hiring
Apply... you need to get experience at interviewing. What you will learn is the following: MOST interview committees care about 1. how you will handle parents; 2. how you will discipline your players; 3. how you will handle your players' academics; 4. how you will handle the booster club; 5. how you will handle the local youth program; 6. what can you do for the people on the committee to enrich their lives
MOST interview committees care very little about football. They care about how you handle people.
Here's a true story:
I was 22 and it was two days before I graduated college when I went on my first teaching/head football coach interview. I interviewed at a small school in Ohio (about 50 minutes west of Cleveland). I was rearing to go with my playbook and strategies. They asked me none of that. All they asked about was how I would deal with people.
The more reasonable you SOUND and the more SPECIFIC you are with your answers, the better chance you have of getting the job.
Now, I'd be lying to you if I said that, itself, will get you the job. The truth is that more than half of the jobs that are given to candidates are because the candidate has an "in" with the committee. One-quarter of jobs are given to someone with previous head coaching experience. The "normal" coach goes in with a 25 percent chance. I've done enough interviews to know this. I wish you the best and keep me posted on what you do. I know that I can be of great assistance in this area.

Coach Lou,
I will keep you posted. thanks for the advice. I just wanted a perspective from someone who did not know me or the situation. I feel I am ready and competent, but I dont do the hiring.
