Installing Today’s Hybrid Pistol Offense Run & Pass from Top to Bottom
This manual provides you with the full offensive line, receiver, and quarterback mechanics for installing each offensive play presented. Coach Campbell has left no stone unturned for implementing today’s Pistol Offense into your program.
We don't, but everybody I know that does it (Indy Colts, etc) has to come up with a set of CODE WORDS (names of CARS, names of cities, girls' names, etc)!
WE RAN A NO HUDDLE TO SPEED UP THE TEMPO AT TIMES AND ALWAYS USED THE NAME OF A CITY FOR A PASS AND THE NAME OF A STATE FOR A RUN. WE USED NUMBERS FOR OUR HURRY UP/ 2 MINUTE DRILL AS WE WOULD DESIGNATE 5 PLAYS FOR THAT GAME AND WOULD SIMPLY HAVE THE QB YELL OUT THE NUMBER OF THE PLAY I WOULD FLASH IN. IN PRACTICE THAT WEEK, WE WOULD LEARN THE DRILL BY GOING ONE THRUGH FIVE IN THAT ORDER AND THEN HAVE THE GUYS LEARN IT INSIDE OUT BY JUST CALLING OUT ANY NUMBER ONE THROUGH FIVE IN NO PARTICULAR ORDER. Always worked great for us.

If you are running no huddle the entire game, get wrist bands for all the offensive players. Change up the snap count by always running the same plays on the same count and denote this on the wrist bands e.g. plays written in blue ink are on one, red ink on two etc.
Plays are numbered on the wristband so just signal (or yell) "43" and everyone runs play 43. Of course, the game plan varies each week so new cards are inserted into the wristband and the numbers will correspond to different plays. You could even swap out the card at half-time if you thought it necessary. I assume most are using a QB wristband already so whatever you are using, just do it with everybody. The card could even have some position specific reminders if you wanted e.g. "X post."
I am not advocating a no huddle approach, just explaining how I would do it.
How flexible is a wristband system? How many plays, even if the same play is put under another color and number, can you put on them. Can anyone give an example of some play calls that they use on their wristbands?
We have had the QB use a wristband in the past, just so we didn't have to run them in. I would have to talk to our OC to know for sure, but I think you can put in at least 20 plays per sheet, and you can get wristbands with multiple sheets. We signaled the formation in by hand signals, then the QB had the different plays on his wrist. I suppose we could do it the same with everyone wearing a wristband. I hate the thought of yelling the number across the field on a windy, noisy night and expecting 11 players to hear the same play every time. Maybe it wouldn't be that big of a deal.
