Installing Today’s Hybrid Pistol Offense Run & Pass from Top to Bottom
This manual provides you with the full offensive line, receiver, and quarterback mechanics for installing each offensive play presented. Coach Campbell has left no stone unturned for implementing today’s Pistol Offense into your program.
That is how we block it against a 30 front. We block it like our stretch play with every one reach blocking. This also allows our playside guard to block any LB's X stunting through B Gap. We also take a very flat path with our QB and pitch back enabling to get to edge. Rather than attack the pitch key, we stay flat and work to the outside alley and let the pitch key declare himself.
How do you run your option? We run the spread and our first "read" is the DE (5 tech usually). We want the 5 tech to release outside, and we simply run flat with QB and RB, and when QB sees DE contain, he pulls it up underneth the PST's block and in essence is running inside zone behind the PSG and C.
If the 5 tech rips inside, we run flat and look to pitch off the PSLB. We never block the PSLB, because he almost never makes the play. We also don't block PSLB on our inside zone since he's usually walled-off.
We think this makes the PST's block easy. We'll work to reach, but if the DE is clearly in a contain mode, we just pull it up and run underneath...
We run our speed option almost exclusively out of a 3x1 set. In a 3-3 stack, you are usually going see cover 3 or 1. The dog (or strong safety) will move out on to our #2 receiver. This forces the stacked backer to move out as well. Our #3 will try to secure that LB. If stacked OLB comes underneath or blitzes, then our WR will move up to the safety. The QB will pitch off the OLB. If the OLB tries to run over the top, then our #3 receiver will stay with his block. The QB and pitch back will continue on their path and stay in pitch relationship. Now, we have two guys out on the perimeter. Generally, our QB keeps it when this happens for a nice gain.
Does the defense stay in a stack look the whole time or do they stem into bob-tail stunts?
Tackle must make pre-snap read on 5 tech and strong backer, either
1. stacked, no stemming..........hook 5 tech, strong backer pitchman
2. backer stems to blitz b gap......block down on strong backer, 5 tech pitchman
3. backer stems to blitz c gap......hook 5 tech, strong backer pitchman
These are the 3 possibilites we faced.....guard blocks middle backer and will help with nose if needed.
If the 5 technique sparks hard to the outside, our tackle will work on his track to cutoff the middle backer pursuing over the top or the stacked backer coming through B Gap. If we pitch off the 5 technique, our #3 receiever will block the stacked backer. Ideally, we want that backer to pursue underneath the block of the #3 receiver. Because we are in the shotgun and staying flat to the LOS, we can get to the perimeter easier. We have had our tackles "read on the run". But I do like your pre-snap reads with the tackle. It would seem easier to make read at the LOS and then go with it.
