Joe Paterno: Old school

JOPA is one of the best without doubt! His credentials are impeccable, his record speaks for it'self.
BUT, all that yelling and screaming at your players is total nonsense as a regular every day occurrence
in my opinion. A kid misses a field goal, that is what PRACTICE is all about, to get better, right? I have always been of the school that the best coaches have always been, and always will be, the best teachers!
Does a good teacher, scream and berate his students, I think not. Now, don't get me wrong. I think a good chewing out,(when it is called for is always in order!) but not as a regular diet. Youknow that old adage about you play on game night like you practice? Well, the same thing for a good coaching staff. A good staff is going to use total positive reinforcement on game night, not get there guys all screwed up by yelling and screaming at them, ESPECIALLY YOUR QB!!! They are going to talk in conversational tones on the phones and to their players. I know all players are not the same and some respond effectively to the yelling and screaming at them approach. However, I found out early on that the vast majority of guys respond much more EFFECTIVELY to a coach who treats them like a man and not like a piece of dirt!!! Just my opinion as always.
